CU Style Blog: Rainy Day “Boot” Camp

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Most collegiettes look out the window on the morning of a dreary downfall and feel discouraged, but a true CU Stylista jumps for joy! This week I found seven sassy women rocking Rainboots in style. Plan for an entire week of rainy days with guidance from these ladies on our campus who brace the puddles themselves.

Lauren Colby: Start off a rainy week with a solid, lightweight jacket paired with standout rain boot to add a little pizzazz to a cloudy campus. Pair your coat with a patterned scarf to break down and personalize the outfit. A great way to stand out in a sea of umbrellas!

Boots: Hunter “Original Tall Gloss” in Limited Edition Turquoise
Coat: Target
Three Words that Describe Your Style: Cute, comfy and functional
Biggest Fashion Regret: Jean Skirts and Jeans

Samantha Sodini: Dragging yourself out of bed on a Monday is a victory in itself, but putting together a cute and comfortable outfit, especially on a rainy day, is borderline exhausting. On days like this, layering is the key to earning an A+ on your get-up. Combining a simple black rain boot with a seasonal sweater and a pretty floral scarf, does just the trick to brighten your morning. Jeggings are your secret weapon to keeping comfy in class all morning. Everyone will be wondering why you look so peppy!

Mary Baker: Nothing is more monotonous than an entire weeks worth of leggings, sweatshirts, and rain boots. So on Tuesday, spice up your attire with a retro trend that will get you noticed. Slip on your snuggest pair of skinny jeans and rock a jean jacket or denim button-up. Try to make sure the two denim pieces vary in darkness from each other to avoid looking like a walking Levi’s Billboard! If you’re feeling classy, add an elegant headband or headscarf to compliment your daring denim ensemble.

Kaitlyn Whittinghill: By the time Wednesday rolls around, all you’re craving is sunshine; so instead of performing an ancient rain-dance, brighten up your outfit! Comfort is still key, and I speak for most when I say there are very few things as comfortable as a wool sweater. A longer sweater will elongate your torso, and complicate an otherwise simple outfit. Grab your wildest pair of rain boots and stomp in style.

Fashion Advice: “Wear what suits you”.
Favorite Place to Shop: Nordstrom

Lena Brown: Be a bold fashionista on Thursday and bust out your best blazer! A blazer will sophisticate even the most scandalous of outfits, so it should be a staple in every collegiette’s wardrobe. It is also a super easy piece thats transfers from daytime to nighttime, so you can get your Thursday night on with ease. Instead of going for a solid color boot, opt for something more wild and divalicious. Prints like leopard are subtle enough where they can be worn with other muted patterns, but also crazy enough to separate you from the crowd.

Emily Walker: When it’s finally Friday, as you may be gripping on the edge of consciousness and throwing your alarm clock across the room, tackle the last rainy weekday with a simple, hoodless graphic sweatshirt. Reminiscent of the 80’s workout scene, loose sweatshirts and leggings have been making a huge comeback. Conveniently, it’s as comfortable of an outfit as you can get, while still being on your fashion A-game. A muted boot is best for this outfit, but if you’re feeling ferocious, cruise the quad with some brighter boots. Trying to get through classes without a little catnap is tough with this snuggly outfit!

Olivia Valler-Feltham: “Cheers to the freaking’ weekend!” Step out on your first day of freedom with an ironically Brit-inspired look. If the sun’s still hiding out behind the clouds, kick it in some standout bright boots, but don’t go too crazy! A hunter’s green or a dark purple pairs perfectly with your favorite band’s tee. Dress up in your Saturday best with an oversized sweater, or even a long raincoat. Jeans or high-waisted shorts work best for this outfit. While you walk the campus, whistle “Here Come’s the Sun,” and perhaps the dreary week will come to the end. Paul McCartney would be proud!

Now that you’ve heard it from the pros, you don’t have to let the weather rule your wardrobe choices. Be bold, badass and don’t be afraid to get your feet wet!

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
