Between going to classes, writing papers, and finishing group projects at the last minute,
it’s amazing that we as college actually have to pencil in the time to sleep and eat! So it’s no
surprise that you don’t have the time to actually donate your time by doing community service
and volunteering
.

But volunteering is something all college kids should experience, even outside of your greek
philanthropy events.

Not only is it something to put on your resume, but it’s actually fun. From decorating and
supervising a prom for senior citizens, to serving food to the homeless, volunteering is the best
way to give back and even meet new people.

If you can ever muscle up the strength to skip out on a nap and volunteer, here’s 5 cool places
to check out.

If you love young kids
1. Check out the Crisis Nursery: Located in Champaign, this nursery provides a 24-hour safe
haven for abused children and families in need. You can play games with the kids and be a
big kid once again. Be prepared to change pampers and get a little messy with baby food. The
children range from birth to 6 years old.

If you enjoy helping the elderly
2. And a soft spot for every grandparent you meet, visit the Heartland Nursing Home. This
nursing home hosts a number of patients, from those needing assistant living and those with
Alzheimer’s. They even throw a Senior Citizen Prom! Just goes to show you, you’re never to old
throw on a dress and boogie!

If you enjoy sports and recreation
3. You’d have a blast running around with kids at the Don Moyer’s Boys & Girls Club! They have
all types of programs catering to kids, from S.M.A.R.T Girls to the Benjamin banneker Club
which focuses on science activities. You could even help with Triple Play, which focuses on
promoting a healthy lifestyle, eating habits and exercise.

If you like food
4. And don’t mind serving it others, you’d like the TIMES Center. It’s specifically for homeless
men needing food and shelter for extended periods of time. While you can help serve dinner,
you can also assist with cooking meals, doing laundry and cleaning the facilities. If cleaning and
cooking isn’t really your thing, you can also teach a class or tutor in Math or English.

5. If you’re a science and tech kind of girl
You will love the Orpheum Children’s Science Museum! They are offering camps over Spring
Break (if you’re staying in town) in morning and afternoon sessions. The day themes range from
zoology, to Harry Potter (Gryffindor fans rejoice!)

When it comes to volunteering, there’s something for everyone. And this is only a piece of the
pie, as there are several different opportunities across town. If you don’t know where to start,
check out the Office of Volunteer Programs, who provides a cool newsletter feature upcoming
opportunities. Just be prepared for a background check.

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
