The perfect first date outfit has been selected – your favorite dark wash skinny jeans, a cute flowy top and your “go-to” suede booties. You feel daring and sophisticated in your freshly applied red lipstick; your clutch and trendy jewelry totally make the outfit. You walk out of your room all put together, do a quick twirl while your roommates “ooooh” and “aah” in sign of approval. You may look fab, but what realistically makes or breaks a first date is not the manicured nails or flawlessly curled hair. It is all about the conversation and making a connection. Let’s face it, spending one-on-one time with your new man candy can be nerve-wracking. “Do I have food in my teeth?” “Does he think I’m funny?” These are common questions we think to ourselves while sitting at the dinner table. Well ladies, listed below are some easy ways to alleviate the first date jitters. From deciding who handles the bill to what entree to pick, your next date will go perfectly with these dealmakers!

The Menu
Be considerate of what entree you select. A first date is not the place to order the filet mignon and lobster special. You also don’t want to insult your date by picking the cheapest meal on the menu! Choose an entree that cheaps things neat and falls in the middle price range.
There are several food items you may want to steer clear of such as:

  • Spaghetti dish with red sauce

  • Messy slab of ribs

  • Salad with low-fat dressing on the side

  • BBQ chicken wings

  • Three bean chili

  • Heavily seasoned garlic or onion dishes

Be mindful that liquor racks up the bill! Keep your alcohol intake to an appropriate amount! I know a glass of wine may ease your nerves, but always keep it classy!

The Conversation
1. First date conversation should be fun and light-hearted! Avoid talking about your ex! No guy wants to hear about the trials and tribulations of your previous boyfriends on a first date.
2. Act interested! Even if your guy is a huge computer nerd or loves his video games, show respect! Nod your head and make eye contact. Although you may not find the conversation riveting, be courteous. Hopefully, he will show the same to you.
3. Don’t dominate the conversation! If you catch yourself saying “I” a lot at the dinner table, stop yourself. It’s a total turnoff when a girl only talks about herself. Ask questions and let your date talk. Plus, you will get to know him this way!

The Bill
Although it is common for the guy to pay for dinner, it is important to let your date know you’re not there just for the free meal! Some guys will be insulted that you offer to pay so make it a subtle gesture. When the check comes, grab for your purse. Chances are your date will tell you to not worry about it and pick up the tab. Tell him thanks and that you appreciate it. If this does not transpire, don’t be offended and offer to split the bill.

Follow these easy suggestions and you’ll totally rock a first date!

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
