Beauty Trend of the Moment: Liquid Lipstick

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

For all of the makeup lovers out there, it’s likely that liquid lipstick made its way into your makeup collection months ago. But for those who are less makeup-savvy, trust me when I say that you might want to get your hands on this…ASAP.

So what is it anyways? Liquid lipstick, or often called ‘liquid to matte’ lipstick, marries the best qualities of matte lipstick and lip-gloss in one product. Like gloss, it’s a liquid-based consistency applied with a brush or sponge tip applicator. And like your traditional twist-up lipstick, it has both a high level of pigment and staying power. Simply apply it directly out of the tube – with or without liner – and let it dry. Liquid lipstick makes achieving the sought-after matte lip quick, easy, and only requires one application to last the entire day (yes you heard me correctly!).

The liquid lipstick trend has been on fire ever since Kylie Jenner famously released her lip kits. At $29.00 a piece, these are actually a great deal (as you get both a liquid lipstick and matching lip liner), but have proved to be quite difficult for eager fans to get their hands on. So if you haven’t been lucky enough to snag one before they sell out within minutes of being released, or you just aren’t ready to make the commitment yet, check out some great alternatives below. Kylie may have made this trend popular around the world, but the makeup community has been buzzing about these game changing lip products long before the lip kits launched.

1. Velvetines by Lime Crime Makeup – $20.00

The self-proclaimed “original liquid to matte”, Lime Crime’s Velvetines are a powerful force in the makeup world. This eccentric brand offers a wide range of colors to choose from, whether you prefer going bold or playing it safe with your lip color. They look great and smell even better! Plus they’re vegan and cruelty-free too.

2. Liquid Lipstick by Anastasia Beverly Hills – $20.00

The reigning brow queen is good for more than just holy-grail eyebrow products. Also available in a range of colors, these are another great option for those wanting to try liquid lipstick. Surely one of the first and best on the market.

3. Everlasting Liquid Lipstick by Kat Von D – $20.00

Tattoo goddess Kat Von D’s makeup line has a great reputation in the makeup world, and her liquid lipsticks definitely live up to expectations.  Many of her colors are frequently sold out at Sephora, including her (arguably) most famous shade, ‘Lolita’.

4. Amore Matte Lip Crème by Milani – $8.99

If you’re just not ready to drop $20.00 on one of these quite yet, or if lip color is still a bit intimidating, Milani offers a great option at an even better price point. Just as pigmented as any other brand, you’ll look and feel right on trend! Look for them in any drugstore makeup aisle.
