Finally, it’s every girl’s favorite time of the year: award season! New trends will be set, new designers will be discovered and our most beloved celebrities will be receiving the credit they deserve for endlessly entertaining us throughout 2011. So far we’ve been able to indulge in watching the Critics Choice awards and the Golden Globes, but awards season has just begun! If you’ve missed out, you still have the Sundance Film Festival, the SAG Awards, the Grammys, the MTV Movie awards and most importantly, the 84th Annual Academy Awards to look forward to.

Last year’s red carpet coverage proved to be a game changer. Remember Mila Kunis and her light purple lacey gown that became an inspiration for thousands of dresses for the rest year? Last year seemed to be the year of pastels, lace, champagnes and feathery details. Everyone wishes they could walk down the red carpet, and these romantic gowns made it worse because they were practically drool-worthy!

Style icons leave an impact on college-aged women who love to recreate and bring new styles to their wardrobes. Sophomore in Elementary Eduaction, Amy Lynch, favors Rachel Zoe’s looks on the red carpet. Lynch said, “she dresses so vintage, lots of black, and BIG jewelry. I’m a big believer in that jewelry makes the outfit.”Maybe jewelry will be the main focus with the stars this year, only time will tell!

Not everyone was lucky enough to get dubbed best dressed in 2011, however. Every year there are the less-fortunate actresses that land on all the worst-dressed lists. Take a comedy female favorite, like Tina Fey in her Zac Posen dress at the Golden Globes last year. It’s heartbreaking to see a fan favorite be ridiculed so harshly for a small dress slip up. Although Tina didn’t win over the crowds with this outfit for which she was dubbed “Mary Poppins,” the good thing about awards season is that there’s always the next year!

Lucky for celebs like Tina, 2012 is a new year, and there are plenty of chances to shine, especially at this year’s Academy Awards. The nominations for the best films of 2011 have not yet been released, but will be announced on January 24th. This pre-show event will be of much enjoyment to all of the beloved Hunger Games fans because actress Jennifer Lawrence, depicting the character Katniss in the upcoming film, will be announcing these nominations.

If you can remember the actress that stole our hearts in the dramatic film Black Swan, then you can remember why it was such a delight when Natalie Portman went home with the Academy’s Best Actress award. There is variety of women coming from 265 films that are in contention for nominations in this year’s awards. Sophomore and Molecular and Cellular Biology major, Kara Fritsche, has two favorite movies from 2011. “I haven’t seen many but I did see The Help and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; I’m sure those will win a few awards,” she said. Lynch agrees with this thought, predicting that Viola Davis of The Help will be nominated and win the prestigious golden Oscar.

These girls aren’t too far off! Indiewire.com predicts that the Best Picture Nominations will be:
1. The Artist?
2. The Descendants?
3. Hugo?
4. The Help?
5. Midnight in Paris

And much like Lynch predicts, Indiewire.com suggests that tDavis tops the list of actresses most qualified for getting nominations this year are:
1. Viola Davis, The Help?
2. Michelle Williams, My Week With Marilyn?
3. Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady
4. Tilda Swinton, We Need To Talk About Kevin?
5. Rooney Mara, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

There’s no telling who will be winning this year’s Oscar’s nominees and awards, but this season’s award-show line up is practically a pre-game of fun until we get there. Be sure to tune into the celebration, awarding an 84th year of film excellence. Comedian, Billy Crystal, will host this year’s show for the 9th time on Sunday, February 26th. So grab some girlfriends and fill out some ballots for a evening filled with fashion, film and of course, the red carpet!

UPDATE: A list of the the announced nominees can be found here!

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
