A Guide to Reality TV

With reality television coming into prominence around the early 2000s, several sub genres have emerged. Real estate reality, housewife reality and more, there is bound to be something for everyone. Follow along to learn which reality show is for you. 

rEAL ESTATE REALITY

Real Estate reality became popular following the hit show “Selling Sunset.” The program follows several female realtors alongside their brokers, Brett and Jason Oppenheim. The women encounter competition with each other and difficulties navigating the family work dynamics. Popular cast members include Christine Quinn, Chrishell Stause, Mary Bonnett and Maya Vander. Christine left the show after season 5 but is reportedly returning for season 10. 

Many similar shows have come up, one of them being “Owning Manhattan.” The show is set in New York City and follows CEO Ryan Serhant alongside many of his employees. It also captures Serhant’s journey, grappling with his brokerage’s (“SERHANT.”) growth. 

Another similar show, “Buying Beverly Hills,” follows the real estate brokerage “The Agency.” 

A prominent piece of the show is the featuring of the Umansky family. Mauricio Umansky directs the brokerage and has invited his daughters, Farrah and Alexia, into the company. The show also features cameos of Mauricio’s wife, Kyle Richards from “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

Housewife REality

Continuing on from the last section, The Real Housewives is a franchise huge in the reality television world. There are over ten variations of “The Real Housewives,” all based in different cities. The premise of the show is to follow a group of wealthy women in each city. Intimate details about the women emerge, and many of the women clash with each other, filling each episode with drama. Popular cities include Beverly Hills, Miami and Atlanta

Recently, the show “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” has gained massive popularity. It follows social media influencer Taylor Frankie Paul and a group of Mormon influencers she helped to cultivate during her time on the internet. Recently, Paul has received major backlash from a video that emerged depicting her and the father of her youngest son, Dakota Mortensen.

The cable network “TLC” hosts a variety of popular reality shows. Some of the most popular include “My 60 Day Fiance,” “1000-lbs Sisters” and “Dr. Pimple Popper.”

“1000-lbs Sisters” peaked around 2022-2023. The show followed sisters Tammy and Amy Slaton through relationship, fertility and weight loss difficulties. While Tammy initially struggled to lose weight, she has recently gained attention for her drastic weight loss. 

“60 Day Fiancé” follows various couples on their journey to marriage or heartbreak. One half of the couple is here on a visa, allowing the couple 60 days to decide if this is going to work, or if one of them is going to return to their home country.
