5 Ways to Get Fit without Going to the Gym

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

I’m all for working out and getting high on my endorphins, but I’ve come to realize that the gym is not always the best place to do so. Between having to workout alongside people who might as well be models, the fact that the ellipticals are always taken and the intimidation of using unfamiliar machines – gyms are definitely not for everybody.

Luckily there are plenty of other ways to stay fit and tone up without ever stepping foot into the gym, and some of these options you can even do from your bedroom!

Yoga

Yoga has so many benefits including increased flexibility, greater strength and improved balanced. Not only that, but it is something that you can do anywhere and it requires nothing but a mat. There are a ton of guides on the internet if you don’t know where to start; Pinterest and YouTube are both great resources!

Hiking

If you are lucky enough to live somewhere with hiking trails, take advantage of both the fitness and beautiful scenery they can provide! Hiking tones up your legs and butt while you enjoy the fresh air. The rougher the terrain, the better workout you’ll get, so embrace those hills!

Blogilates

Blogilates is great because they are quick videos that actually work. The instructor, Cassey Ho, created a new type of Pilates called “POP Pilates” that incorporates music and an upbeat twist to traditional Pilates. You can choose a cardio video, or one that targets a specific body part. I promise that if you do the videos you will see results!

Running

When most people think of running they imagine doing laps in high school gym class and let out an audible groan.  But rest assured, running doesn’t have to be terrible! Events like the Color Run or Mudderella are so fun that you won’t even realize that you’re working out until you’re done. There are also programs like Couch to 5K designed to get beginners on the right track! Keep a fun playlist ready to go and you’ll feel unstoppable – even if you’re only running a mile.

Weight Lifting

Weights are super affordable, and incredibly versatile. You can work out your arms, back, legs and everywhere in between with just one set of weights. Weighted squats help you get lean muscle in your butt and thighs, arm curls are great for adding definition and holding your weights to your chest as you do crunches will assure you see quicker results. As always, if you need help coming up with a routine, the internet is a plentiful resource.

Despite what you may think, working out doesn’t have to be hard and you can do it without going to the gym. Try any of these five fitness routines to get started today!
