2010s Trends I Think Will Return

Arianna Winters Student Contributor, University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.

One key principle of fashion is that trends always come back. In the late 2010s, we had a lot of trends originating from the 80s/90s (mom jeans, oversized blazers), and now in the early 2020s,  2000s is all the rage (velour tracksuits, structured vests). In the past, fashion was in a 20 year cycle, which means trends always returned every twenty years, but this phenomena has collapsed in recent years with trends coming and going in just weeks at a time. This is why, as much as wish the clothing I wore in middle school disappeared for eternity, the trends of the 2010s may be coming back sooner than we think. Here are my predictions of which trends will be returning.

Boho Fashion

Most people that are generation Z or millennials are familiar the boho outfits sported by Vanessa Hudgens, Teyana Taylor, and Jasmine Tookes at Coachella. During the 2010s, flower crowns, crochet tops, and gold jewelry ran rampant, and with the return of crochet tops in the recent years as well as influences from 70s fashion, we’ve seen this with the trending show Daisy and the Six), I think we will be seeing these kinds of outfits in the near future.

Skinny Jeans

This is more of an educated guess, but with the return of knee high boots, I think it is only a matter of time before we see the pairing of skinny jeans and knee highs, which, again, was very popular during the late 2000s/early 2010s. It also should be noted that high fashion brands like Celine have recently had fashion shows with their models all sporting skinny jeans, so eventually I believe the general public will be returning to this style of jean.

Tumblr Fashion

Ok, so I don’t think all of Tumblr fashion will return (I would prefer the moustache shirts to stay in 2014), but I do think some of the famous staples like the skater skirt, the cousin to the trending pleated skirt, will most definitely return. Other trends I see potentially coming back are chokers, the fixation we had on striped sweaters, and shorts over tights. I will say that determining whether some of these Tumblr trends went away in the first place can be iffy, due to these trends being heavily influenced by grunge in the 90s.

Bomber Jackets

So these are a personal favorite of mine, but I do think bomber jackets will be everywhere in the nearby future. Many celebrities have recently been spotted wearing this style of jacket, including Taylor Russell, Drake, and Kendall Jenner, and due to me being bias I will encourage you all to also participate. These jackets are versatile, warm, great for layering, and just overall look flattering, in my opinion. I think we will definitely see more of these during the 2023 fall/winter season.
