From Making Beats in His Mom’s Basement to Smashing Guitars on Stage, Dabin Gets Ready for “Into the Wild” Tour

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

If there’s anyone that truly owned the 2019, it’s Dabin. The Montreal-based music producer and instrumentalist released his second album titled “Wild Youth” and joined Illenium on the ASCEND tour. He’s becoming one of the most sought-after acts in the world of electronic music — and he’s unstoppable.

Dabin kicks off the new decade with a new single “Holding On (feat. Lowell)“. If you’re currently getting over a relationship, or perhaps a situationship, it’s the perfect song to blast to amp up your feels some more. Lowell’s refreshing vocals add the perfect touch on Dabin’s dynamic tune.

He also just announced the dates for his Into the Wild tour. Before the crazy tour life begins once again, I caught up with the Canadian-Korean artist.

What sparked your interest in producing electronic music, and how did you get your start?

Most of the friends I made in university were listening to it. I’ve always been a musically curious individual so while listening to Skrillex one day I thought how cool it would be to make something like him. And so my production time increased as well as my absence from classes.

Did you find it hard to gain your parents’ support once you decided you wanted to become a producer/DJ? Or, were they completely open to it?

My mom was very unsupportive in the beginning. But rightfully so. She’s laid back but also very strict when it comes to career-oriented decisions. She just didn’t believe that there was a viable and sustainable way to generate an income with music. Especially in the first year or so, when I quit my full time job and had to live at my mother’s house and convince her that one day I’d surely be able to support myself while I microwaved a pizza pocket and made beats in her basement. She has definitely come around though!

What is it like to work with the ‘Sadboi’ group and how has that relationship has grown over the years?

It’s been such a blessing. These guys are first and foremost my great friends and we always look out and support each other. Whether it’s through using our platforms to push each other, or just having someone who I can depend on to give me honest feedback, I’m very grateful for their support and friendship. I actually moved to Denver and live with Said the Sky now so it’s been great for more creativity to have someone like him in the same house.

If you could do a collaboration with anyone (dead or alive), who would it be? Why?

My answer to this is always changing, but currently I’d love to collaborate with Bring Me The Horizon. There are a lot of people who didn’t like the more “radio friendly” shift in their music, but I found my creative self aligning with a lot of their musical ideas as of late and I believe we could create something really interesting.

2019 held a lot of great things for you with ‘Wild Youth’ among so many other things, what can your fans expect for 2020?

I’m going on my new tour this Spring called Into the Wild. It’ll be the final chapter to the Wild Youth era so fans can expect a lot of edits of these songs, new songs from a new album I’m working on, and I’m also bringing some amazing support. I hope to see you guys at a show!
