Kony to take over ISU

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

KONY 2012 has been a popular topic on Facebook and has been frequently trending on Twitter. It’s safe to say that this cause has quickly been spread worldwide and will only continue to grow. For those who are just now hearing about KONY 2012 for the first time, I encourage you to read about it and watch the YouTube video dedicated to it or take a look at this video that was sent to HerCampus by an Illinois State student.

More background information:
As said by Catherine Poe on March 13, 2012, “A self-proclaimed prophet, Kony has been wanted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court since 2005 for the atrocities that he has rained down upon the villages of Central Africa for the last twenty years, ranging from kidnapping boys to serve as soldiers to the rape of girls, using them as sex slaves, to the burning villages to the ground to the mutilating of villagers by hacking off their lips.” Over the years US troops have been sent to Central Africa to help end the war and stop Kony, but unfortunately it has not been enough. Kony is still a free man, which means children are still in danger, which is why millions of people want to continue to spread the word and capture Kony.

After watching several videos, I myself was extremely moved. I had never heard of Kony until I watched videos and read statuses that were posted on Facebook and Twitter. Others have also been extremely moved and willing to help fight for justice, while some have surprisingly gotten very upset and angry. This is because some believe false information is being given to the public, and they don’t support the KONY 2012 movement. It’s safe to say this cause is causing a huge controversy on what is true and false when it comes to the fight to find Kony.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I encourage everyone to become informed and form their own opinions as well. But one thing is for sure; millions of people all over the world do care enough about the cause to want to make a difference.

For those who would like to join forces with others and help make the cause even bigger, you can attend the public event, “Cover the Night,” which will be hosted by six of ISU’s very own students. The event will be held Friday, April 20, 2012 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Anyone and everyone is welcome. At the event, posters, signs, banners, and more will be hung all over to help make this cause more known. Participants are encouraged to make shirts, sweaters, buttons, and more to wear while they run around covering buildings and such with their signs.
