As I attempt to complete my fifth week of classes, I have been bombarded with assignments, clinical observations, job responsibilities, participation in the other activities I am involved in on campus and more. Being a college student is hard, and being away from home makes it especially difficult for us introverted homebodies. As a generally busy person at school, I have had very little time to sit back, relax and reflect on my semester thus far. Most of us college students are overwhelmed at this point, and these overwhelming feelings are second nature. When I’m engulfed in these feelings, I cherish the time that I can try to connect with home.

One of the best ways to combat homesickness is by calling your family members or hometown friends. Talking about your life and listening to theirs will make you feel less alone and get you out of the rut that is homesickness. Even if it’s just for a minute or two, seeing those familiar faces that remind you of your hometown.

Call a Family Member or Friend

One of the best ways to combat homesickness is by calling your family members or hometown friends. Talking about your life and listening to theirs will make you feel less alone and get you out of the rut that is homesickness. Having time prioritized to reach out and see people that remind you of home is very helpful, especially if you have friends that go to different school, or are studying abroad. Even if it’s just for a minute or two, seeing those familiar faces that remind you of your hometown.

Surround Yourself with Reminders of Home

Making your space a reminder of those you love is an amazing way to not feel homesick. I am a huge fan of putting pictures of family and friends in my space at college to remind me to check in on people from home. Some of my favorite ways to give my space a little more personality is by putting up posters, framed pictures, or maps of the area I live near. These small contributions to a space will make you feel cozy and comfortable.

Go Home for a Weekend

I get it. Life is super busy at school. Sometimes it feels impossible to take a break and not worry about homework, or the next paper you have to submit. Going home is a great way to find that relaxation if your schoolwork permits you to. Going back to home-cooked meals and hometown walks are very comforting and grounding, which might actually make you feel more motivated to complete assignments.
