How to: Keep Positive with Affirmations

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Early mornings can be rough, and waking up to the same boring walls everyday isn’t very motivational. Up until I got the chance to redo my room, this was the struggle that plagued my days, but a makeover including the strategic placement of some positive affirmations changed all of that. Now when I wake up and begin my morning routine, I am surrounded by décor and other objects that make me smile! The power of positive affirmations resides in their ability to be seen, so be sure to use the following list as a guide to making the most of your positive affirmations!

1. Bedroom

Every morning when I wake up, the first thing I see is a painted canvas that says, “Never Let Anyone Dull Your Sparkle,” hanging on my wall. Although not all my mornings seem sparkly, this friendly reminder helps me wake up with a smile! If you don’t have any décor, another great way to keep positive affirmations in your room is to use an expo marker to write some on your mirrors. Writing a little positive message to yourself every morning is more powerful than you think!

2. Bathroom

After finally rolling out of bed, I head to the bathroom, and after traveling across the hall (it can be such a far distance when you’re still half asleep!) I need a little more motivation. Hanging on my bathroom walls are printed canvases with one of my favorite old-Hollywood actresses (Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe) on them. Seeing their stylish looks besides some of my favorite quotes gives me inspiration when I’m washing my face and doing my makeup for the day. These women were very successful in their careers, so being reminded of that when I’m preparing for my day inspires me to achieve my goals!

3. Mugs

Next up is breakfast! My roommates make coffee every morning, and along with their favorite cup of joe is a little inspiration courtesy of their favorite coffee mugs! Not only do our decorated mugs brighten up our collection of kitchenware, but they also can be great conversation starters when we have guests over. No matter if it’s just for you or for décor, mugs are a great place to keep some positive reinforcement!

4. Clothes

Throughout the day, it’s easy to lose that spark of motivation from the morning, so having cute messages on your clothes is good way to ensure you stay inspired all day! The recent trend on campus is wearing workout gear for day to day activities, and most of the brands that make those clothes cover them in positive affirmations! So not only will you be motivated all day long, but it might even get you to make a trip to the gym because of how good you look and feel!

5. Jewelry

Another place to keep positive affirmations for all day inspiration is on your jewelry. One of my favorite midi-rings says “Love” on it, and although it’s small and simple, it’s a constant cute reminder of the love that surrounds me!

6. Keys

From experience, I’ve learned that having little messages of encouragement in the car is a great way to battle road rage, and there is no better way to do that then by accessorizing your keys with some keychains! Whether it is a keychain with a written message or just additional jingle, having something a little extra to personalize your keys can make all the difference after a long day of driving!

7. Car

Along with your keys, having positive messages on your car is another fun and interesting way to keep you smiling while on the go! My favorite way to do this is through window decals, but other options include window paint and visor clips. Any way you do it, this placement of positive affirmations not only inspires you but also everyone driving around you- the easiest way to pay it forward!

8. School Supplies

Nothing like a little positivity on your school supplies to keep you motivated throughout all that studying! After arriving to class, I love being able to take out notebooks and folders that not only show off my unique personality but also promote a positive message on them. Seeing the fun messages all day long makes taking notes so much easier, I swear!

9. Desk

Having a little extra encouragement by your desk can never hurt! I have the wall by my desk covered in magazine clippings and décor that include interesting quotes on them so that when I look up from my books I’m able to be motivated to keep going.

10. Frames

Along with those magazine clippings and other décor by my desk, I also keep frames there and throughout the rest of my room! Having both my favorite pictures and my favorite quotes all in one place makes staying inspired all the more fun. By seeing special moments in my pictures alongside my favorite positive affirmations, I’m able to attach that quote to that moment, so that every time I see the picture, I get reminded of my little mantras. It’s a great way to reminisce while working towards a positive future!

All in all, there is no limit to where positive affirmations can go! Be sure use this list to expand on your own placement of positive affirmations and share your own suggestions in the comments below! If not, fill up the comments section with positive messages so we can make this yet another place where positive affirmations can extend their reach!
