How To: Drink Alcohol and Stay Fit at the Same Time

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Binge drinking and ordering a Papa Johns pizza is pretty much a college tradition since the beginning. Freshmen year especially, you think you are invincible and that all this drinking is never going to catch up to you. Well, you soon realized that the freshman 15 is a real thing and you’re amazed by just how quickly that happened. Flash-forward to junior year and you’re finally 21 and although this might be the most exciting thing to ever happen to you, it is not the most fun thing for your waistline. Here are a few tips on how to stay thin while still going out and having a good time.

Compensate: If you’re know you’re going to be going out and drinking the night away, don’t eat as many high fat and high calorie food during the day. Cut back a little. Maybe you don’t need those chips for lunch or that extra cookie. By compensating during the day, the calories you drink at night will affect you less.

Pick your poison: Yes I know that marg tastes amazing but it can pack upwards of 500 calories and a ton of carbs. Choose a light drink like a light beer or vodka. Both have a significant amount of less calories and vodka has 0 carbs.

The Munchies: This is probably the hardest part of it all because it is very hard to control. If you’re going to drunk eat, try to only have one piece of that pizza or a small portion of whatever it is that you are eating. It’ll be a struggle but you’ll thank yourself in the morning.

The Gym: Just get there. It doesn’t have to be everyday and it doesn’t have to be for hours long but the reality is, you have to work out to keep the weight off. Alcohol is empty calories and is in reality doing more harm to your body than anything. It is not providing any nutrients and therefore it must be sweated out of your body.
