Food Porn: Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Almost everyone I know loves Auntie Ann’s pretzels. Well, this is even better. This amazing cinnamon sugar pull apart bread not only tastes like Auntie Ann’s, but it makes your house smell just as good! I have made this a few times over the summer and everyone eats it all before it even cools off. There are a lot of steps to make this amazing treat, but its definitely worth it.

Dough:
2 ¾ cup flour
¼ cup sugar
2 ¼ teaspoon dry yeast (1 packet)
½ teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons butter
1/3 cup whole milk
¼ cup water
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla

Filling:
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
4 tablespoons butter (melted until browned)

Step 1:
In a large mixing bowl, mix 2 cups of flour, sugar, yeast, & salt. Set aside.

Step 2:
In a small sauce pan, melt the butter and milk. Once the butter is completely melted, take off stove & add water & vanilla. Let the mixture cool for 5 minutes.

Step 3:
Pour the liquid mixture into large bowl with the dry ingredients & mix well. Whisk together the eggs & add to the batter. Keep mixing. Add ¾ cup of flour & keep mixing. (The dough will be extremely sticky after this which means you’re doing it right.)

Step 4:
Place the dough in a medium greased bowl. Cover with saran wrap & let sit for a 30 – 45 minutes. Once the dough as doubled in size, knead in 2 tablespoons of flour. Cover dough again for another 5 – 10 minutes.

Step 5:
While the dough is rising, start on the filling. Mix together the sugar, cinnamon, & nutmeg in a small bowl & set aside.

Step 6:
Brown the butter in a small saucepan. Once browned, take off stove & set aside.

Step 7:
When the dough is ready, roll it out on a floured surface. Brush the butter on the dough & sprinkle the sugar mixture on top. Make sure the dough is covered in butter so that the sugar mixture sticks.

Step 8:
Cut the dough into equal strips. Stack the strips on top of each other & cut into equal squares.

Step 9:
Place squares side by side in a bread pan & preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Cover the dough for another 10 minutes while oven is heating.

Step 10:
Bake in the oven for 30 – 35 minutes.
