Dry Skin Survival Guide: 5 Products That Work

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had sensitive skin. Along with being born with eczema, over time I have accumulated many other dry skin conditions on multiple areas of my body making getting ready for the day harder than it should be. My eczema has matured and evolved as I have, eventually causing other skin issues to occur, especially in the winter. Because of this, I have gone through tons of different products to find ones that work without breaking the bank. Below is a list I have compiled with my top five most used products. Using just a few of these will get you on the right track back to smooth, healthy skin, so read on!

1.     Cococare Cocoa Butter Cream

For my family and I, this product is our go-to for any dry skin area. It’s lightly scented and leaves you feeling rejuvenated without a greasy residue, which allows you to continue on with your day without having to wait for your skin to dry for long periods of time (been there, done that!). Also, the sunny yellow container can’t help but make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside!

2.     CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion

With the recommendation from my dermatologist, I bought this product looking for a solution to my perpetually dry hands. During the cold winter months, my hands tend to become extremely dry, causing my knuckles to split making it hard to do daily activities like writing, cooking, cleaning, and so on. After I started using this product, I started seeing results right away! Just like the bottle says, this moisturizing lotion helps not only to moisturize your dry skin but to “repair and restore your skin’s natural protective barrier” so that these problems won’t continue to arise!

3.     FixMySkin Lip Balm

I love wearing lipstick and lip gloss, but when the winter months approach I can’t get my hands on this lip balm fast enough. Walking to and from class, my lips are always being exposed to the elements, and with all the skin issues I already have, chapped lips are bound to occur throughout the winter. After trying pretty much everything they had on the shelf in Walgreens, I brought my search online only to find this product (http://www.lovelyskin.com/c/fixmyskin). Unlike other lip balms, this product has one percent hydrocortisone in it and is unflavored, two factors that change the game tremendously when it comes to buying sensitive skin products. For me, this product leaves my lips feeling stronger AND pillow-y, allowing me to rock dark lipstick and lip gloss all winter long!

4.     Lubriderm Advanced Therapy Lotion

When you’re feeling especially dried out, this is the product for you! Like Cococare’s cocoa butter cream, I also use this product practically everywhere on my body. With vitamin E and B5 infused within its formula, this product does a great job of hydrating your dry skin without feeling sticky and greasy. I love using this lotion at night after a long day in the elements because it’s dense enough to really soak your skin but light enough to keep you comfortable all night long!

5.     Humidifier

After recently moving to a new apartment, I have come across a new problem to add to my dry skin history: battling dry air. When lotions and balms don’t seem to be doing the trick, I recommend getting a humidifier. This product diffuses mist into the air at a click of a button, leaving your skin to feel less like sandpaper and more like butter. Humidifiers also come in many shapes and sizes giving you tons of options depending on your dry skin needs. I have a small, personal humidifier that I turn on before I go to sleep (Hint: look for one that says something along the lines of “whisper-quiet” so that you won’t have to hear a loud noise all day and night when you are trying to sleep!) and let it run all night long so that when I wake up my skin feels soft and healthy. Trust me, after one use I couldn’t stop bragging that #iwokeuplikethis!
