The Best Spooky Movies to Watch on Netflix this October

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Ah yes, October. It rings in the unofficial start to fall and brings with it the changing of leaves, a cool breeze and most importantly, Halloween. Sure we spend all month long dreaming of the last day of the month when we get to transform into another version of ourselves. But before that, we need something fun to fill out nights with. Sure some nights we will go to a haunted house, or try to weasel our way through a corn maze. Yet we still need something for all the other days of the month. That’s when scary movies enter our view. You could spend hours searching for the right movie on Netflix and never find it. So I have compiled a list of the best spooky movies to watch on Netflix that will make you quiver in your cute autumn boots.

1. The Babadook (2014)

This movie takes place in present time in Australia. It’s a psychological horror film that centers a widow and her six year old son. The son, Sam, begins to see a monster that at first, his mother cannot see. The film is a refreshing take on your typical horror story and leaves you with an eerie feel knowing that, “you can’t get rid of the Babadook.”

2. Scream (1996)

The start to the series powerhouse, the late director Wes Craven brings us the epitome of a teen slasher film. It takes place in the fictional town of Woodsboro, California, and follows teenager Sidney Prescott. The town becomes plagued by a mysterious killer known as “Ghostface” because of the mask he wears.“Scream” brought us the infamous “Ghostface” mask and is a Halloween classic worth re-watching.

3. Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Acclaimed actress Jodi Foster stars opposite Anthony Hopkins in this crime thriller. Foster plays an FBI trainee who meets with the incrassated Dr. Hannibal Lector (a former psychiatrist turned cannibal) to be able to catch another serial killer known as “Buffalo Bill.” With five stars on Netflix, Silence of the Lambs’ greatness is definitely agreed upon.

4. The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)

Following a documentary crew making a film about Alzheimer’s patients “The Taking of Deborah Logan,” finds a new twist on your typical possession movie. While you can guess whether or not Deborah Logan ends up either being truly sick or demonly possessed, that does not take away from its originality.

5. Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Starring Johnny Depp as infamous character Ichabod Crane, “Sleepy Hollow” retells the age old tail of the Headless Horseman. In 1799, Crane heads to Sleepy Hollow, New York, to investigate a series of murders in which the victims were decapitated. The fight between the supernatural and reality are driving forces in this Halloween favorite.
