Advice for ISU Communication Majors

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

One of the most important decisions a college student makes is selecting their major. Many of us change our mind once or twice and, hopefully, wind up where we’re meant to be. Inside Fell Hall is where many communication majors spend most of their time. And, if you ask most of them, deciding to be a communication major would likely be one of the best decisions they’ve made while at Illinois State. So, for anyone considering becoming a member of the School of Communication, read on for some communicative insight.

1. You will be required to take COM 111. This class deals with communication theories. For a 100-level, undergrad course, it can be pretty intense. But, it’s crucial to take this class seriously, as communication theories come up time and again in so many other classes. Pro-tip: take notes on EVERYTHING and create a study group for exams.

2. Apply for scholarships. It’s no secret that scholarships can help students a great deal;however, many do not attempt to apply for them. The School of Communication offers many different scholarships that students should be taking advantage of.

3. Join a club. The School of Communication offers many great clubs that satisfy different communication interests. There is WZND for radio fans, TV10 for television production, and The Vidette for writers and photographers. These clubs are not just for communication majors and are a great way to meet people and expand your resume.

4. Keep everything. A major in communication is something that continuously builds upon itself. Keeping notes from prior classes can help in the future. During your senior year, you will be required to take a capstone class where you build a portfolio. Hanging onto everything is key for success.

5. Get to know your professors. You may have the same professor a few times throughout your span as a communication major. These instructors not only provide you with academic info, but can be great sources for advice on what to do post-college.
