7 Shows You Need to Watch This Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

When the weather outside is frightful, there’s nothing quite like snuggling up in bed with Netflix and the remote. I’m one of those ‘TV-addict’ girls; I love finding a great new show to engulf myself in. Lucky for me, an entire month off of school left me with plenty of time to catch up on my favorite shows and even check out a few new titles. Here are some of my favorite shows, new and old, that I think you’ll love too.

1. Girls

Girls, Girls, Girls. This show is perfect for chicks my age because it so accurately (and hilariously) depicts what life is like in your 20’s…very awkward but full of adventure. Created by actress Lena Dunham, this comedy-drama follows a group of girlfriends living in New York as they navigate through humiliating but so often embarrassing-things-that-have-happened-to-me-too situations. Girls just recently won a Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical; and creator and actress Lena Dunham took home the globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy. Girls is sure to keep you laughing all through season two, which premiered earlier this month.

Episodes from Season One are available at Projectfreetv.com and new episodes from Season Two air Sundays at 9 on HBO.

2. Homeland

Unlike the other shows on this list, Homeland has a much darker and dramatic feel to it. After five years of being a P.O.W., American soldier Nick Brody is rescued during a military raid in the Middle East. CIA agent Carrie Mathison (played by Claire Danes) believes Brody is a traitor now working for al-Qaeda, who poses a serious threat to U.S. national security.  Perceived as a war hero by millions, Brody faces numerous problems as he tries to become a part of society again. Homeland took home three Golden Globes this year: Best Television Series – Drama, Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama went to Damien Lewis, and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama went to Claire Danes.

Homeland is in its second season. All episodes are available on Showtime and at ProjectFreeTV.com. New episodes air Monday nights at 7 on Showtime.

3. Vampire Diaries

God Bless The Vampire Diaries. I never thought I’d be the one to say it, but I LOVE vampires. Especially some Ian Somerhalder looking vampires. The Vampire Diaries is a story of two vampire brothers, Stefan and Damon Salvatore, who both return home to Mystic Falls, Virginia after 100 years of being separated. Both brothers return for their own personal reasons but quickly find themselves having to come together for a greater good. The town is crawling with supernatural beings such as vampires, witches, and werewolves. As the season progresses, Damon and Stefan both find themselves falling in love with the same human girl, Elena Gilbert. Frequent flashbacks to the 1800‘s (and a lot of ass kicking) add a unique touch of American history to the already powerful plot line. The show has a mysterious but sexy vibe about it and Nina Dobrev, who plays Elena, is irresistible.  If you love romance, a little action, and a nail biter you should defiantly check out The Vampire Diaries.

Full episodes are available at ProjectFreeTV.com, CWTV.com, and instantly on Netflix. Episodes from Season 3 air Thursday nights at 8 on the CW.

4. Breaking Bad

When high school chemistry teacher Walter White is diagnosed with terminal cancer, his biggest worry is not when he will die but how his family will survive financially once he is gone. With a baby on the way, White makes the most dangerous decision of his life: to begin producing and selling meth. With the help of one of his former students, Jesse Pinkman, White dives into a life of crime. Together the duo makes a lot of money and takes a bunch of risks, all while White battles his cancer and fights to stay alive. Breaking Bad embraces the classic dilemma of what’s right and what’s wrong that leaves it’s audience begging for more.

Seasons 1 through 5  are available on Netflix and ProjectFreeTV.com. The next episode in Season 5 is scheduled to air in Summer 2013 on AMC.

5. Revenge

Revenge is a dish best served cold, right? In this romantic thriller, Revenge tells a story of a little girls heartbreak that has turned into vindictiveness. After years of being away, Emily Thorne returns to the Hamptons in search of vengeance for her father’s murder. When Thorne was a little girl her father was framed and proven guilty for a terrible crime. After being sent away to prison he was brutally murdered in order to keep the truth from escaping. Throne knows her father died an innocent man and won’t stop until the people responsible for his death get what they deserve. Expect nothing less than to be on the edge of your seat in this this sexy, girl-power, addictive thriller.

Revenge is in it’s second season which airs Sunday nights at 8 on ABC. Episodes from Season 1 are available on Hulu and ProjectFreeTV.com.

6. Modern Family

Two words: Sofia Vergara. I mean, that’s enough of a reason for me to watch Modern Family. Between laughing with that Spanish fox every week and learning the facts of life (AKA PHILosohy from the shows outlandish father figure, Phil Dunphey), I can’t get enough of this show. Modern Family follows three families all interconnected through Jay Prichett, the father of Mitchell and Claire. Together, these three families deal with issues almost every family has to deal with no matter what the household dynamics are. Modern Family perfects the classic domestic sitcom, but with a lot more laughter, and reminds us all that every family is just as strange as our own.

Modern Family episodes from the first three seasons are available on Hulu, Netflix, and at ProjectFreeTV.com. Episodes from Season 4 air Wednesday nights at 8 on ABC.

7. Gossip Girl

Oh Gossip Girl, how I love you so. If I could throw a Gossip Girl themed party I would. (Any takers?). It is one of the greatest shows I’ve ever watched. It is addictive. The ultimate drug. It’s disgusting how much I love this show. Once you start watching you’ll have the hardest time stopping yourself, trust me. Not only is the cast packed with amazingly good looking people, (Chuck Bass, marry me?) but the plot is riveting. It isn’t one of those shows that waits until the last five minutes to finally move the story along (I’m looking at you Pretty Little Liars). Each episode is packed with drama and a new plot is introduced almost every other episode. Gossip Girl follows a group of friends from the Upper East Side through high school and college. They are the most privileged teenagers, all children of multi-billionaires, and coined ‘Upper East Siders’ by the anonymous Gossip Girl. They have great parties, wear beautiful clothing, travel to breath-taking places, and each of them has their own limo. Best friends Serena van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf together are an unstoppable duo…unless they’re taking on each other (nothing beats an S & B girl fight).

Gossip Girl was on the CW for six seasons and the series finale aired this past December. If you love fashion, fantastic looking people, great shoes, and cat fights…. I HIGHLY suggest you check out GG. Seasons one through five are available instantly on Netflix and all six seasons are available at ProjectFreeTV.com.
