5 Things to Tell your Roommates More Often

1. Thank you for always listening

Since the beginning of the school year, not a day has gone by where none of my roommates asked me how my day was. Everytime one of us comes through our apartment door, you’re bound to hear “Hello, how was your day”. These are the small things we all take for granted. Whether it’s staying up till 2am talking about our boy drama in the living room or waking up to our group chat going crazy  because someone had another ‘life crisis”, my roommates have never failed to be there for me. College can be extremely lonely at times so having people in your corner is essential to keeping your sanity.

2. Thank you for taking care of me

You know how when you’re at home you feel like you don’t have to worry about real life as much because you have the protection of your parents right at your side? Well that’s kind of how roommates are too. Whenever I get sick at school and the only thing I want is my mom, my roommates are the first ones to make sure I am okay. We are always checking in on each others mental and physical health. You cannot perform your best if you are not eating enough, if you are worried about being short on money, etc. This is why we all make an extra effort to take care of each other because we know the real world is scary but at least we have each other to lean on.

3. I am grateful to have the opportunity to learn from you

Living with three other girls is interesting to say the least. Some of us grew up doing chores and helping our parents around the house while others never had to do any of that. This, along with having different majors and personality traits, allows me to learn so much from my roommates. Even though they sometimes think I have nothing to learn from them since I am the one who knows how to cook and clean, what they don’t know is that they teach me patience. Explaining to them how things work reminds me to be more understanding that not everyone grew up like me. They make me a better person by giving me the opportunity to teach what I already know and learn from their experiences.

4. Thank you for putting up with my crazy

Everyone has a crazy side. We all have little triggers and pet peeves that can flip a switch in our brain from chill to the Incredible Hulk in under 5 seconds. My trigger happens to be a messy apartment. After multiple occurences of me turning into the Incredible Hulk, my roommates still want to be my friend. For that, I am forever thankful. There are not many people in the world who can see the worst parts of you and still want to be in your life. However, with my roommates we could freak out on each other one minute and then be laughing about some nonsense the next. We definitely deserve an award for being able to tolerate each other.

5. I Love You

Above all else, I have so much unconditional love for my roommates. They are helping to shape me into the person I want to be. My roommates are like extra sisters that get to be there with me through one of the biggest transitions of my life (college), which is nice because for most of us, our actual sisters can’t be here. Roommates are always there for you to fall back on that’s what they deserve to hear why you appreciate them more often. It is extremely easy to get caught up on the negatives so don’t forget to remind your roommates that you love them.
