10 Struggles of Long Distance Best Friendships

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Nothing is more sad than not being able to yell and wrestle with your best friends because you are miles apart. When you don’t have the people you grew up with around 24/7, it is a huge a deal. There are SO many struggles when you’re in a long distance best friendship, but the best part is that you’ll always have them even when they’re hours and hours away. Here are some of the things that happen when you’re going through a long distance best friendship:

1. You don’t live a block away from them anymore.

Whenever you call them crying they can no longer just say, “I’m on my way.”

2. It’s probably easier finding Nemo than it is to schedule a Skype date.

Your schedules never match up when it comes to class, homework, sleeping, eating, and other things that probably don’t matter. Skype dates that happen before 2 a.m. are probably non-existent.

3. Your life consists of chocolate, tissues, and binge watching Grey’s Anatomy… by yourself.

4. You’ve become an FBI agent.

It’s not that you get jealous of them when they hangout with new friends. BUT, between the new girls and any potential baes… you’re a professional stalker on social media.

5. You get a tad bit excessive with tagging them in Facebook videos to express your emotions.

You wish that you could be there to see their face whenever you’ve tagged them in something completely ridiclous.

6. You don’t have any motivation for midnight ice cream runs by yourself.

I mean, best friends are supposed to support you by screwing up your diet for ice cream at 1 in the morning, right?

7. When another girl posts a picture of your best friend and calls her “her best friend”… WTF OH NO SHE DIDN’T!!!!

8. You’ve lost your personal Dr. Phil.

Your best friends probably have way more issues than anyone else in the world, but they know every inch of your soul and they give you the best advice. They truly care and want what is best for you, and you can trust their advice over anything. (Even though all of us have that one friends who’s advice is “just get drunk…”)

9. Whenever something happens to them and you can’t be there for them.

You wish you could constantly be with them at the crazy party they went to, or be with them whenever they fall down the stairs so that you could point and laugh (and Snapchat) at them.

10. You might not have seen them for six months, but it feels like nothing has changed when you do see them.
