10 Fun & Safe Ways to Celebrate Spooky Season during a Global Pandemic

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Just like how summer looked a lot different this year, so will fall. But just because things won’t be the same doesn’t mean it can’t be fun! Spooky season is upon us, and if you’re a Halloween-lover like me, you’ll want to go all out in any way you can.

Here are some fun autumn activities for the month of October you can try.

Go to a pumpkin patch (wearing a mask, of course)

This is a great opportunity to pick out a pumpkin to carve, buy some cute gourds for decorations, and to snack on a pumpkin spice donut while sipping apple cider. And you can take some cute fall photos with your friends while you’re at it!

Make Halloween-themed desserts

The holidays are the perfect time to indulge your sweet tooth, and I’m not only talking about Christmas. If you ask me, any time between October and January 1st is “the holidays”, and you best believe I’ll be baking countless cookies and other sweet treats, all with a spooky twist.

Scary movie marathon!

Whether it’s classics like The Shining, Halloween, or Scream, or more modern horror films such as The Conjuring or It, there is no better way to celebrate spooky season than with a scary movie! And if you’re not into thrillers, there are always the go-to Halloween movies such as Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and my personal favorite, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

Paint Halloween pottery

There are so many cute Halloween options to paint at pottery places, such as Frankenstein mugs and pumpkin bowls. Many pottery places are offering on-site, masked painting, or pack up your chosen ceramics, paint colors, and brushes to take home and then bring back when you’re done painting to get glazed.

Create a spooky charcuterie board

I’ve seen these all over Tik Tok lately! They are so cute and look absolutely delicious. Fill yours with different kinds of candy, homemade Halloween desserts, and even throw a pumpkin on there. You can really get creative and use your imagination for this one!

Buy new décor and go all out on Halloween decorations

This might have to be my favorite fall activity – I love decorating! I’d be lying if I said I didn’t spend wayyyy too long in the Halloween section of every store I go into and wayyyy too much money on decor. I always seem to be bringing home a new decorative pumpkin, a spooky lawn decoration, or fancy Halloween glass. You can decorate the inside of your house, outside, or both. And if you’re like me, go all out!

Have a bonfire and tell scary stories with family & friends

This one isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s definitely a good way to get into the Halloween spirit! Roast some marshmallows, get your friends and family together and gather around the campfire for some spooky stories.

Carve pumpkins and toast the seeds

I absolutely love picking a design and carving my pumpkin every year! I always put a multicolored light inside mine and place it on the front porch for a must-have Halloween decoration. And the best part is the seeds you scoop out! Toss them on a baking sheet, sprinkle some salt and boom, you got tasty, homemade pumpkin seeds.

Host a small Halloween party (costumes mandatory!)

Deciding what to be for Halloween has always been one of my favorite past times about this holiday. Although Halloween parties are going to be happening on a smaller scale, you can still get your roommates or whoever you’ve been isolating with together for a costume party! There are so many fun options to choose from, you could even make a competition for the most original costume.

Hand out candy (and buy some extra for yourself, too)

I feel like this one goes without saying. Happy spooky season!
