The Grammys are habitually, and historically, one of the most glamorous and exciting events of the year. Celebrities of all kinds congregate to recognize the amazing talents of the world’s greatest musical artists, all while dressed ridiculously well. The yearly event also happens to occur less than a week from Valentine’s Day, which is a time to embrace the positive aspects of our lives. Emotions have been high-strung and anticipation of both events has been permeating the air, but who better to remind us of the meaning of St. Valentine than the humbling Kanye West? Nobody, if you’re asking Kanye. He saw the Grammys as an opportunity to instill in us the important values of Valentine’s Day. Here are a few key reminders about Valentine’s Day from Yeezus himself.

1. Appreciating others

Valentine’s Day is all about loving, appreciating, and respecting others. Kanye reprimanded Beck, who won album of the year, for his apparently selfish act of accepting the prestigious award that he rightfully won. Instead, Beck “should have given his award to Beyoncé”, and was “smacking people [Beyonce] in the face” by not doing so, according to Kanye.

2. Beauty

Kanye carries over this theme of respect as he reminds us of one of the most prominent themes of Valentine’s Day; beauty. Speaking about his wife Kim Kardashian in a post-Grammy interview with E!, Kanye declares that “Beauty is important! I mean, the Kardashians wouldn’t be famous if beauty wasn’t important!” The respect and admiration for his wife is almost tangible.

3. Keep it lighthearted

Valentine’s Day has a tendency to cause a feeling of overwhelming pressure, anticipation and anxiety. However, Kanye reminded us that it’s helpful to be able to make fun of ourselves. As Beck was accepting his award, Kanye started to walk onstage, suggesting a repeat of when he interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the Grammys a few years ago. Once onstage, he flashed a smirk as he shook his head and walked right back off, joking around with the audience about the controversy he caused with Taylor.

4. Maintain an undertone of seriousness, don’t play with our emotions

Since Valentine’s Day is all about the exaggeration of love and is often joked about, people appreciate a hint of seriousness. Kanye reminded us of this during the E! interview, because joke’s on us, he wasn’t kidding when he got onstage! Oh no, he was rather serious and wanted to interrupt Beck but managed to refrain himself. Kanye reinforces the common sentiment that people in our lives “Need to stop playing with us. We ain’t gonna play with them no more.”

5. Support your loved ones

Mrs. West stepped up for Kanye to remind us that support is important. In life you will be faced with difficult times and experiences, so the support from your loved one’s is crucial. Kim posted this instagram, showing her appreciation for her husband’s words and actions.
