For all those hands on and DIY inspired collegiettes comes a class project that was brought to life by HWS students. Whether it be a curiosity for design or architecture, this 3D class taught by Ted Aub gives you once in a lifetime experiences to test your talent. On September 7th, the class decided to jump into helping build the bones of an anticipated playground for citizens of the Geneva community. Located right behind Geneva Gardens (neighbors with JPR), the month and a half long project of building a bridge to connect the neighborhood to the plot of land was created. Scroll below to see the highlights of the project.

st Step: Students broke up into groups of four to brainstorm and create models with twigs for a bridge. Professor Aub and his team decided on Sophie Wensberg, Will Helmetag, Noah Rowdin, and Rebekah Skovron’s model.

nd Step: Over the next few weeks the class broke up into bigger groups to find appropriate trees in the woods to use as the skeleton of the bridge. A difficulty of finding healthy wood that wasn’t rotted by termites was a common theme (Will Helmetag chopping down tree).

rd Step: Figuring out a way to hold the bridge up without using nails. Keep in mind the class is using huge tree trunks bigger than every student (Ethan Kula, Matt Freider).

th Step: Sawing notches into the bridge for it to be a stronger structure. With the help of Hobart Alumni the class was able to use a chainsaw to get more work done.

th Step: Transporting the bridge to the actual site.

th Step: The next few weeks was all about nailing, hammering and boarding platforms to make the bridge useable.

th Step: Putting a railing on the bridge to ensure safety to prevent anyone from falling off (Matt Frieder).

th Step: The final touches were made October 16, where the class finally finished the bridge. It is open to everyone who want’s to check out what teamwork can accomplish at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
