A Story without Words

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at HPU chapter.

According to researchers at Alabama University, having multiple tattoos can boost your immunological response, which makes you pretty much invincible to infections. Getting inked is similar to working out. When the needle first threads through your skin, your body is weakened and after you leave the parlor, the constant threading leaves you feeling exhausted because you’ve injected a foreign contaminant into your skin. At the gym, this means soreness because you’ve pulled a muscle from working out too hard.

Let’s say you go to the tattoo parlor a couple months later to get another tattoo. It hurts less and your body starts to get immune to the contaminant. When you go back to the gym to do the same routine, your body hurts less and you become stronger. It’s because the contaminant your body is able to fight off from the ink enables your body to fight off other foreign contaminants. Through getting inked, you develop a strong immune system. Just like through working out, you develop to become stronger without pulling muscles. After the stress response to the needle, your body returns to an equilibrium.

History often forgets to mention about tattoos is the health benefits behind the ink. Not so long ago, tattoos were only found on sailors and convicts, and it eventually rolled over into the categories of drugs and gangs. From a college student that has four tattoos, getting my first one at sixteen, I can confirm that most people who do have tattoos are not affiliated with any of those stereotypes. In fact, tatted people are one of the friendliest and genuine people I’ve ever met.

About 45-million Americans have at least one tattoo and don’t even realize the health benefits to it! People get tattoos because it represents something that is relevant and important to them. People get tattoos because it’s another way of expressing yourself without hurting others. People get tattoos of things they love or things they represent. People get tattoos because they’re cool and they want it just to have it. People get tattoos because it tells a story on their body without any words. A tattoo is YOUR tattoo, and no one else in the world has a replica of it.

So get that tattoo you’ve been wanting since you were sixteen! Here’s your final push. Build your immune system in the most unique way possible and you’ll love yourself for it. My first paycheck from a real working job was all spent on a tattoo. It was worth every penny.
