Homesickness: Remembering home when you’re away

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at HPU chapter.

Being away from home especially during a pandemic can make anyone feel a little homesick. But don’t worry, many college students of different ages and at different points in their journey experience homesickness at some point no matter how far away from home they are.

Here are three tips to help you remember home when you’re away.

#1. Contact with friends and family

Keeping in touch with your friends and family is one of the most important ways to remember home. They can keep you updated on any important events or other interesting moments you may have missed. You can also stay updated by following them on social media platforms. Talking with them provides you with a sense of peace and comfort.

#2 Care Packages

During my first year of college and even now, my mother and grandmother have sent many packages from home. You can ask close relatives or friends to make little care packages and mail them to you. You can ask them to include some of your favorite snacks or some knick-knacks, or any sentimental items to have a little piece of home. For example, you can ask someone to mail a favorite stuffed animal or homemade treats.

#3 Photo albums and scrapbooks

Photo albums and scrapbooks are a nice way to keep home on your mind – and if you don’t already have one, make one. It can also be a bonding experience for anyone back home assisting you with it. It’s a comforting method to remember home because you have a physical reminder of your favorite/best memories.

Homesickness doesn’t last forever and it’s completely normal. Hopefully, this can help you to overcome it.
