Zoom Into Zumba

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Howard chapter.

Health, besides school and social networking, is one of the major concerns of collegiettes. Many college women have reasons for not exercising that range from not having enough time, to not having access to a gym, to not liking the art of exercise and many more! There is one sure fire way, however, to make sure that you have fun, exercise and move that body, and the answer is Zumba. A Latin-inspired dance class, Zumba involves dance and aerobic elements. Music of varying speeds is played in order to help participants move, exercise and shed pounds. Gone are the monotonous days of going to the gym and doing the same workouts over and over again. Shift things up with Zumba!

According to healthmad.com, Zumba inspires a full body workout. When you are at the gym, you are mainly focusing on one portion of your body. One example includes when you do cardio on the treadmill or an exercise bike. These activities primarily involve working the lower body. Zumba, however, exercises the entire body and provides benefits for your heart, burns calories and is a great way to get toned.

Now, we are all familiar with the freshman 15… Yes, the scary, yet sometimes unavoidable phenomenon that plagues many college girls and even guys! Whether you are a freshman who refuses to gain weight, or an experienced upperclassman that still needs to shed those pounds, Zumba provides a chance for you to get in shape. Health savvy collegiettes know that doing this is a great way to gather friends, forget about homework and have fun (it is like going to a party or club, without getting dressed up)! For those of you who enjoy humor, you might get a kick out of watching other participants shake to the beat! Laughing for at least ten to fifteen minutes burns 10 to 40 calories.  Hence, the good news: if you simply want to go for a good show, you’ll get in shape as well!

One question that might be on your mind is: This sounds great, where can I find a place do it? Well have no fear; Howard University bison deserve only the best information. One place that is close to school and irresistibly convenient, is the Banneker Community Center located on Georgia Avenue. They provide bi-weekly classes on Mondays and Wednesdays starting at 7:30 pm. The best part, besides the opportunity to dance the night away, is that it is free!

Let us beat the statistics that state that by the year 2030, half of all Americans will be obese!  Join a Zumba class and dance your pounds away. By the end of the session, you would have had so much fun that you would have forgotten that you were working out!
