The Great Lessons Learned from the Michelle Obama Podcast

Earlier this summer, in the midst of a pandemic and racial strife within our country, we were undoubtedly blessed with a gift from the one and only Michelle Obama. The former First Lady is a trailblazer and role model for many, myself included. Now, with the creation of her podcast, “The Michelle Obama Podcast”, we are getting to fully appreciate all of Obama’s honesty, wisdom, and insight, as she speaks on societal issues such as race along with more personal topics like relationships. There are numerous lessons to be learned when listening to “The Michelle Obama Podcast,” so here are a few of the most inspiring truths told by her.

The Importance of Having Supportive Girlfriends

When speaking with her close group of friends on episode 5, “The Gift of Girlfriends…,” Obama and her girlfriends tell the ups and downs of their lives and the strength of their support system. Despite being put into the limelight as First Lady, Obama’s friends were always there for her and vice versa, exemplifying that you can achieve anything when you have a solid friend group.

Prioritizing Health and Reducing Stigma

With everything going on in the world, now is the time to take care of yourself. In “What Your Mother Never Told You About Health…” the topic of women’s health and how we view it is discussed. For so long it has seemed as if it was taboo to speak on certain aspects of women’s health; however, with the assistance of OB/GYN Dr. Sharon Malone, Obama is most honest in this episode by using personal anecdotes to talk about the importance of investing in health and saying that there is nothing taboo about taking care of yourself as a woman.

Relationships are Work

Definitely one of the cutest episodes on the podcasts is where Michelle and Barack Obama sit down and discuss the state of the world. Speaking of the effects of the presidency on their lives along with changing times in the U.S., you can tell that the Obamas’ invested in their relationship, which is the main topic of “They Do…” with comedian Conan O’Brien. Nothing is easy, especially not relationships, it takes time, commitment, and effort. Notably, the most important take-away from the podcast is that relationships are a partnership, and in order for a team to win, both players have to put in work.

As one of the most influential voices of the last decade, Obama has been a mentor for many young women in today’s world. With the creation of “The Michelle Obama Podcast,” she offers vulnerability but is still undeniably profound and full of wisdom that deserves to be shared. If there is one lesson to be taken away from her podcast, it’s that our time is now. Now is the time for us to stand up and share our voices and advocate for our truths, because if we don’t do it, who will?
