A new challenge called the Silhouette challenge has taken over social media. It involves individuals standing in a doorway as “Put Your Head on My Shoulder” By Paul Anka plays. It then transitions to Doja Cat’s song “Streets” as the scene changes and these individuals are exposed with little or no clothing but are still “hidden in the shadows” due to a red light filter that only shows the silhouette of one’s body.

The challenge was meant to be a sexy yet safe expression of body confidence but of course, the greediness of people overwhelmed the simplicity of the challenge. Information as to how to remove the red filter from people’s videos have been spreading and as a result people feel unsafe or uncomfortable posting their version of the challenge on social media. People have even taken the time to warn others of the dangers of posting the challenge, encouraging them to not post it at all unless they are 100% willing to accept the possibility of someone removing the filter and seeing them with little to no clothing.

The obvious problem here is, no one should have to be afraid to do a completely harmless challenge just because others do not know how to respect people’s space and privacy. Someone might be fine with doing the challenge as long as the filter is on but would not be fine with it being removed. No one should have to feel like they have to be censored and paranoid just because of the selfishness of others. Women especially are being targeted as they are the main participants in the challenge. Unfortunately, it is just another hurdle to jump over and another thing to be paranoid about in the digital world as a female. Though it is sad, it is simply another reminder to be conscious of what goes on social media and even though it is an extremely uncomfortable and scary situation, it should not at any point hinder the confidence we have. Be safe, conscious, and have fun on social media!
