NBA Announces New All-Star Game Format as a Tribute to Kobe Bryant

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Howard chapter.

It’s been a week since the tragic death of NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his 13- year-old daughter Gianna “GiGi” Bryant. As it is still a shock to us all, the NBA All-Star Game is coming up next weekend ,and the NBA has decided to include a tribute to Kobe Bryant by changing the original format of the game.

The game will take place in Chicago, on Sunday, February 16th. Team Lebron (West) and Team Giannis (East) will play against each other with their top 10 NBA players from the Eastern and Western Conference. As usual, they will be playing to win money for the charity of their choice.

This new format of the All-Star game will hopefully intensify the competition. First, the teams will compete to win each of the first three quarters with 12 minutes to play. At the end of those 3 quarters, the leading team’s cumulative score will be calculated and 24 points will be added to that score. Twenty-four signifies Bryant’s jersey number that he wore during the last seasons of his NBA career. In addition, this number will be set as the final target score. At the beginning of the 4th quarter, the game clock will also be turned off and the teams will play a final untimed game. Finally, whoever reaches the final target score first ,wins the game.

In conclusion, Kobe Bryant was a very influential basketball player, and because of his legacy, he will continue to be honored in a multitude of ways. All-Star Weekend is February 14th-16th. Tune into the All Star Game next Sunday at 8pm!
