“I Wanna Dance with Somebody”: An Inner Look at Whitney Houston’s Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Howard chapter.

After bringing Freddie Mercury’s story to life with “Bohemian Rhapsody” in 2018, Academy Award nominee Anthony McCarten is bringing an incredible story to life through another musical drama. “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” is coming to theatres on December 23 with BAFTA Award winner Naomi Ackey as Whitney Houston.

Houston was one of the greatest female R&B/pop singers of all time. Her untouched vocals were just a small part of who she was. This story is sure to pull on some heart strings as the celebration of her life and music are told through her life experiences. With the amount of buzz “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” is already getting, I’m sure it’ll be even more popular after its release.

This movie is in collaboration with a bunch of companies. Nail polish brands Gelish and Morgan Taylor worked together to make the “Holiday Winter 2022 I Wanna Dance Collection” with the motto “a color for every star.” The collection of six shades is available for a limited time. Available in JCPenney stores, Urban Hydration has released a collection of skin, body, hair and hand cream products. Firmenich partnered with the Scent Beauty team to make Whitney Houston’s signature fragrance.

The movie shows the viewer how she was discovered in the 1980s by record executive Clive Davis. With Davis also being a producer for this film, I’m sure the story will be more personalized and is bound to show Houston’s life through an incredible lens. From obscurity to fame, we will get to see how Houston came to be the popular international artist we all know now.
