How to Make the most of the spring semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Howard chapter.

The spring semester is here and in full effect. The spring time means a new start and new opportunities for many college students. While some people may not have gotten the college experience they wanted last semester, spring is a great time to start over and make the best of your college days. College is definitely what you make it, so why not start now? Here are some ways you can make the most of your spring semester.

1. Join clubs and organizations on campus

Student clubs and organizations are always looking for new members. Keep an eye out for announcements on social media and around campus for opportunities to join new activities. Clubs are a great way to involve yourself in your own interests and meet new people at the same time.

2. Go to class and aim to earn the best grades

Having a balanced schedule in college can be difficult, and at times overwhelming. It’s important to keep track of your responsibilities both in class and outside of the classroom. Spring semester is a great time to improve your grades and performance in class. Last fall, you may not have gotten the GPA you wanted. Fortunately, now is the time to learn from your mistakes and improve.

3. Meet new people

College is all about balance. This can include but is not limited to balancing your education, social life, hobbies, and career goals. While it’s important to perform well in class, you can’t let your entire college experience revolve solely around academics. Go out and meet new people! Whether that be through clubs or through mutual friends, go out and enjoy yourself.

4. Find ways to network with alumni The beginning of the spring semester also includes the race for the perfect internship. January and February are the best times this year to get a head start on applying for internships for the summer. Visit your advisors to see if they have any opportunities lined up for students. It is also important to connect with alumni within your career field in regards to possible internship opportunities.

5. Have fun!

Last but not least, remember to have fun. Spring is the first time in a long time where the temperature is nice and you don’t have to wear winter clothes. Pop out in your springtime fashion and enjoy being outside with friends while making the most of what college has to offer.

Spring is the time to live your best life. Don’t let anyone or anything get in the way. Enjoy all that life has to offer while you are in college, and make the most of this new semester. Meet new people, join new clubs, and do your best in class. As long as you put effort toward everything you do, this semester will be one of the best yet — so make the most of it.

Deni Dedmon is a sophomore speech-language pathology major from Albany, GA. Her first love was writing but her second love was helping others, which led to her choosing a career in speech pathology. When it comes to her writing, she loves to write about everything, from entertainment (she’s an avid Kehlani fan) to book reviews (she’s been reading since the age of one) to controversial topics and current events (ya know, your average angry black girl things). Being the oldest of five girls, she is also passionate about young black girls, their self-esteem, and making sure that they’re proud of being who they are. At the age of seventeen, she became a contributor for MTV Founders and a spring writer for Affinity Magazine.
