The Hard Truths of New England Winters as a Southerner

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Holy Cross chapter.

Coming from southern Florida, there were many awakening moments that I learned the hard way, when it came to the winter season. Here is a list of 10 things to avoid when going to college in a hilly, windy, winter city.

  1. Do not wear your uggs when it is snowing. You will slip and fall in front of a group of upperclassmen. It’s only funny when you’re with friends, but when you’re only walking to the dining hall; yeah, not funny!
  2. Gloves are a must. You might think it looks silly, but when you’re holding things, and your hands freeze off, you’re going to wish you had them.
  3. If your hair is up, your eyes will turn red, and it definitely hurts. Make sure you have plenty of hats.
  4. Blow-dry your hair before you go out. Your hair will freeze.
  5. Get a pair of ugly Ugg moccasins. Sacrifice fashion for warm toes.
  6. Layers, layers, layers
  7. Get a pair of boots.
  8. Buy jeans without rips. You will be cold.
  9. Waterproof mascara! When it is cold and windy, your mascara will bleed onto your face. From experience, it is not fun with you looking like you’re crying while walking into class.
  10. Keep chapstick, hand location, and cream in your backpack!
