Thanksgiving Epiphanies

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. From the tasty turkey to the crispy casseroles, there’s a lot to look forward to. This time of year gives me the opportunity to remind myself of all of the privileges I have. While it is nothing less than a privilege to have the education I have, my physical needs met, and tons of opportunities to prove myself, what I think I am most grateful for are the people in my life that I do not deserve. Particularly, I am so grateful for how much I get to laugh, and how many people I get to love.

While I’ve always been conscious of this, it wasn’t until I came to college where I discovered that wherever I went, I would always have people I miss, and that you can find love in everything and everyone. Whether it’s a facetime from my parents, a laughing attack with my friends, or simply making a baby giggle, love is everywhere, and it’s the things like these that truly make life worth living. Along with that, I am lucky enough to not have to search for this. With everyone and everything surrounding me, I am reminded of the love I get to share whether I see it or whether these people make it known to me. Give the love you get, and give it to everyone. I promise there is more than enough to go around. Call your family, care for your friends, and turn ordinary places into something worth staying for.

So this Thanksgiving, if you find yourself at the table trying to articulate what you’re thankful for, start by reminding yourself of all the places you find love. In my case, the people make the place, so I am eternally grateful to have so many places I can call home.

Holy Cross '26

Hi! My first name is Mary but I go by my middle name which is Berit. I am from Bedford, NY, where I graduated from Fox Lane High School. In high school, I played soccer and flag football, and was a captain for both teams. I am now a freshman at College of the Holy Cross where I plan to either major in Psychology or Political Science.
I became a certified New York State Firefighter in 2024 and have been volunteering at my local department since 2021. As both the youngest and one of only 4 girls in my class, I learned how to carry myself with confidence and determination in professional settings. I became head of the department's recruit program, where I would oversee all the other youth recruits and would help organize events for the firehouse, often times involving my town's community.
I also interned at the Westchester County Board of Legislators at the end of my senior year, where I wrote numerous proclamations and pieces for the weekly newsletter in addition to editing all E-blasts and other write-ups. I learned a lot about local government, but more importantly, improved my writing and editing skills.
I am so excited to become more involved with Her Campus and am looking forward to this year!
