I Tried “The Ordinary” and Here’s What I Thought

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Holy Cross chapter.

One of the gifts I received for Christmas this year was the “most loved Ordinary collection” minis (including the hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and caffeine eye serums). I was very excited to try this, as I have had the same very basic skin care routine for about two years now. I have very acne prone combination skin and have always had a hard time finding products that worked for me. After finally figuring out what cleanser/toner/moisturizer combination worked for my skin after years of trial and error, my skin was in the right place to add more products into my regime to target some remaining issues.

I was a little nervous adding some more products into my regime after so much bad luck with other products, and at the time I was going through a particularly bad breakout all over my face, but I gave it a go. I first added in the caffeine eye serum as it would not be on a large portion of my face. After a week, everything was going well so I added in the hyaluronic acid, and still, I wasn’t having any bad reactions or breakouts. My skin was actually starting to feel less dry. Then, a week later, I added in niacinamide. This was the product I was most nervous to add in because I have heard of people having bad breakouts from niacinamide. However, I still wanted to try it because it is supposed to tighten enlarged pores and even out skin tone, both of which were skin concerns for me. This was the product I feel had the biggest impact on my skin. After about three weeks of consistently using niacinamide, I noticed the pores on my cheeks look visibly smaller. I was very happy with this result because, as I stated, larger pores on my cheeks is something I always disliked about my skin, but to notice a difference both with and without makeup on was incredible to me.

I would say the product I notice the least amount of impact is the caffeine eye serum, and I will most likely not be repurchasing it because I do own a few other eye serums I would like to try. Now about two months after starting a new skincare regimen, I can say that I am very happy with The Ordinary products. I have repurchased the niacinamide as well as the hyaluronic acid, and I would highly recommend these products, especially the niacinamide!
