How to Plan a Party in College from Someone Who Just Threw One!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Holy Cross chapter.

I’ve always loved planning parties, but never got to throw any in high school. When I came to college, I knew I’d make use of having my own room to do so. My birthday was this past weekend, so I planned a pink birthday party, and it was super fun. Here are some ideas for the next party you have!

Pick a theme!

There are so many fun themes to pick from. If it’s for a birthday, you can decorate the room as your favorite color, and wear that color since you’re the birthday girl! If it’s a set group of friends, you can pick themes for them to dress up for as well! People can dress as different celebrities, a certain decade, states, dress in monochromatic colors, or literally anything else you can think of. I think a theme always makes a party more fun.

Make a guest list!

Make a list of people to invite, and I’d recommend over-inviting, because if people can’t make it, it’ll ensure you still have a good group there. Ultimately, be open to other people coming. Word gets around and some of your friends will probably bring people you didn’t necessarily invite.

Decorate!

Get fun decorations at stores like Party City and Target! For my party, I had pink balloons, lights, and streamers.

Prep the room!

Be sure to hide anything breakable, put away your rugs, and make sure anything valuable isn’t in plain sight. Be sure to have supplies to clean up the next morning, such as a vacuum and floor wipes.

Make a playlist!

Having good music is vital for a fun party, so make sure to make a great playlist and ask friends for song recommendations as well! This is the playlist I used for my party! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1k4bBhAb2HGhIkNutjDahN?si=60055e8a327b4718

Take Pictures!

Make sure to take pictures to look back on! It’s especially fun to use a Polaroid, disposable, or digital camera. I used a disposable camera and I’m so excited to see how the pictures came out when I get the developed ones back in a few weeks.
