Fresh Fall Looks on the Hill: Featuring Your Summer Essentials

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Holy Cross chapter.

Whether or not we want to admit it, that bittersweet time of year in which the sun begins to set on our so-called “endless summer” and Mother Nature starts to cool things down is upon us. As syllabus week comes and goes faster than our spray tans fade (am I the only gal whose face repelled each and every ray it tried to soak up?), the temperatures slowly but surely take a turn towards chilly. This is no time to fret, ladies!!  Vibrant hydrangeas may have disappeared from view, but the excitement of a new year is in full bloom! It’s time to trade in beach waves for Kimball trays and sand between our toes for when is this assignment due?! September screams “TAKE RISKS!” and suggests open-mindedness. Whether we are living in a new dorm, narrowing down what major to declare, or finally discovering what our true passions are, the beginning of school marks the opportunity for positive change.  And yes, the same is true for fall fashion!

Autumn is a truly beautiful time of year in which growth and change are extremely visible. So, as Kelly green goes into hiding and russet comes out to play, so do your coziest cable knits and softest knee-highs. Feeling overwhelmed by the transition from barely-there summertime getups to lots ‘n’ lots of layers for fall? Fear no more! Work your sunny essentials into September (and beyond!) with a little mix-and-match magic.

  1. Sweet Sundress + Sweet ‘n’ Soft Sweater

Simple yet ultra cute, pairing your signature summer sundress with your worn out go-to cable knit or a bright fitted sweater is the perfect way to begin bundling up as fall freezes over. Opt for a flouncy dress underneath in a bold print to balance out the basic, cozy sweater on top. Hold onto that summer fever a bit longer by accessorizing your look with strappy sandals. Especially chilly September night? Top off the outfit with brown boots and camel-colored knee highs. Ah-mazing Autumn!

  2. Keepin’ it Cropped

For a super stylish take on the ever-so-popular yet ever-so-freezing crop top craze, pair the summery trend with an old-school plaid mini. Keep the colors muted and opt for a bright tight or shoe for a necessary pop of color. Offset the peak of skin with an open, lengthy cardigan. Leather booties or white high-top Converse?  The choice is all yours!!

  3. Near Sheer

Fall is characterized by unpredictable temps, and your fashion statement should be just as spontaneous! One day its mild, the next FRIGID. Clothing can’t keep up?  Invest in a sheer, button-up, long-sleeve blouse. Take this piece from day to night with ease! Class time calls for a tank underneath with a cute and flouncy (summery, perhaps?!) skirt with muted tights and flats. Swap the skirt and tights for skinnies, leather booties, or strappy sandals, and a statement necklace at night. (For added OOMPH, mix up that hairstyle, girl!)

  4. Can’t Hide, You Camouflaged Cutie

Cargo goes from a fashion don’t to a major DO in a camo jacket. The quickest and easiest way to transition into fall wear is layering: toss on a lightweight jacket over basics to add the WOW-factor to an otherwise blah outfit. Denim shorts, white tank, glitzy flats, top bun, and your jazzy jacket and you are all set! Grunge gal? Doc Martens, Duh!

  5. Hi High-Waisted

No need for summertime sadness just yet, ladies!  Save that kiss goodbye to your shorts for the next few months. For now, work your high-waisted shorts from summer into your daytime wardrobe with some fall essentials. Tuck in a basic long sleeve or lightweight knit sweater and layer on plenty of bangles. OR, opt for a solid tank and long cardigan to balance out your bold lower half. Accessorize this look with a knit infinity scarf and cute sneaks and you are on your WAY to becoming a fierce fall fashionista!!
