How to Survive Class Registration

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hollins chapter.

This week we all survived advising, which means that next week, we’ll be facing the terror that is “Fall Registration.” Whether you’re a seasoned junior or an anxious freshman,
dealing with the Hollins network, frantically typing in CRN numbers, and racing against the clock with the rest of your class is stressful, so the HC Hollins team decided to put our heads together and give you our top seven registration tips!

7. Have alternates – Classes fill up so make sure you have a second option for every class you want to take. You can always beg your way into your first choice later but until you have that add-drop form in your hands, its good to have a backup plan.

6. Write everything down – Some of us have had the terrible experience of thinking we signed up for British Lit. II and finding ourselves in Physics 101, all because we flipped two digits in the CRN number. When it’s time to sign up for classes, have all your information written out on paper, preferably in very large letters.

5. Get to the chopper – …early. You sign up depending on your class year and it’s a good idea to log on to HIS 15-20 minutes before your sign up time. If you’re going to be using a school computer, it’s a good idea to get to the labs in Dana or Pleasants early as well before all the seats are taken.

4. Know the prerequisites – HIS knows everything about you, including what classes you have and haven’t taken yet. The system won’t let you sign up for classes you haven’t officially fulfilled the prerequisites for but an add-drop form from a professor will override the system. Just make sure to storm your professor’s office early to get their signature before the class fills up!

3. Stay Calm – Sometimes the system overloads and the web browser freezes. Try and use the most updated browser that you can and refresh, refresh, refresh!

2. Know your PIN – Check, check and double check your pin number! You can’t sign into the system without it!

1. DON’T PANIC – We repeat: Do not panic. HIS can sense your fear and will react aggressively. But seriously, just take a few deep breathes, sign on early and you’ll be ready to pick your classes and set up a great Fall semester.
