We feel you – sometimes, you just can’t help dozing off in classes… especially the ones you take just because they’re “required.” Between interning and partying, all-nighters and clubs, it’s difficult to find time to sleep outside the classroom. Unless you can get an override for the requirement, here are a few tips to keep your eyes open and your head from bobbing up and down while you’re getting a lecture.
Work out before class. For some, this may seem like it would increase exhaustion, but this actually gets the blood pumping and boosts energy.
Caffeine=the other energy booster. And the ultimate college kid staple. Coffee, soda and Red Bull are just some of the ways you can stay alert (though they may cause the need for a few quick bathroom breaks).
Always keep your hands moving. Majority of the time, professors will frown upon texting and/or using your laptops, so it’s not always possible to keep your hands active with technology. However, if you just can’t pay attention in a particular class, simply rewriting your notes, doodling or even thinking of ideas for other classes/projects (how do you think this article was conceived?) will keep your brain active enough to stay awake.
Participate! Crazy concept, huh? But if you try to take the time to understand what your professor is trying to teach, some lessons can be thought-provoking. (Plus, it can’t hurt your grade to raise your hand once in a while.)
Pick classes with your friends/people you know. It’s not elementary school anymore, so chances are you’ll be able to sit next to your friends. Even if you sit right in front of the professor, just exchanging glances with your friends could be a reason why you won’t fall asleep.
Set vibrate alarms on your phone. It’s the perfect way to startle yourself!
Bring food to class. Likewise to keeping your hands moving, chewing gum or eating will help keep your eyes open. Foods such as granola, fruit and cereal are great in-class treats because they help refresh your mind, so you’ll be able to focus.
When you can’t force yourself to pay attention, how do you keep your mind awake in class?
