A Look Inside the Independent Fashion Bloggers Conference

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

In today’s day and age there are so many outlets to get your fashion news. There are actual magazines, Smartphone apps, online magazines, and now more recently blogs. It is so easy to start a blog and showcase your own personal style and favorite collections. It’s kind of like a small army of well-dressed boys and girls typing away from behind their laptops about something they adore. I am one of those girls.

There is nothing I love more than scouring through the glossies and other blogs to find inspiration for my own. So when I found out about the Independent Fashion Bloggers conference, I jumped at the chance to go. Walking into Milk Studios on February 8, I was automatically surrounded by girls just like me. There was a sound of hundreds of heels pounding against the floor to get to their seats and get ready for the panels.

The conference covered a variety of topics such as, “What are bloggers worth,” “Media goes mobile,” “Your blog, your dream, or just beginning,” and finally, “How to make your blog irresistible.” The panelists were composed of well-known, well-respected professional bloggers in the industry. They told us about the importance of being unique with your blog, and staying true to what you love.

They also discussed the importance of social media. Almost everyone nowadays has a Twitter, Instagram, Pintrest, and Facebook accounts. It is so important to utilize them when promoting your brand or blog.

The panelists also discussed how important it is to stay genuine to yourself and your blog. There are so many blogs out there, and if you don’t stay true to what you love, it will make your blog boring. There is no point in writing a post just to gain followers. If you don’t love what you are doing, it will show through your work.

In the end, the most important thing I learned is that it does not matter if you have thousands of followers; it does not matter if you aren’t getting thousands of views a day; all that matters is that you are doing something you love. The advice of the panelists and me for you is this, DO NOT BE AFRAID TO BE YOU. Never be ashamed of who you are. Never compromise yourself or your style just to please others. If you stay consistent with what you cover on your blog, people will come.

An important note to keep in mind—never post something you would not want your grandparents reading. You should never put something on the internet that could tarnish your image.

Your blog should be for you and no one else. In the end just stay true, stay positive, and stay fashionable!
