How to Make the Most Out of Your Winter Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Winter break is just around the corner, and sometimes it can be hard to figure out what to do with all this–what is it called again? Oh, yeah, free time! Five weeks is a long time, and if you aren’t going anywhere on vacation or if you don’t have anything planned, five weeks can start to feel like a million years. Here are some ways to kill time in a fulfilling way and to truly make the most out of your winter break!

Mindfulness Meditation

Let’s make one thing clear: this is a break, so do just that, and give yourself the break you deserve! Mindfulness meditation is awesome because it requires no physical activity, and it will help you to relax more. If you need some guidance, technology is amazing, and there are so many mindfulness and meditation apps out there now. Healthline released a list of the best meditation apps of 2019, which you can find here

Hang Out with Friends/Reach Out to Old Friends

Sometimes we have friends from high school who we fall out of touch with because life gets busy, but that’s okay! People tend to overthink the concept of reaching out to someone, but from my experience, nine out of ten times the person I reach out to is completely open to hanging out. If the thought of hanging out with someone you haven’t talked to in a while crosses your mind, don’t overthink it– just text them. Go out for coffee or go ice skating together; human connection is awesome!

Journal

An amazing outlet, journaling can be a great way to reflect on this past semester, and even this past year as a whole, and to also think about the year to come. Writing down goals, no matter how small you might think they are, is always helpful and it gives you a foundation to work from as you enter this next year.

Get a Job

If you don’t already have a job lined up for winter break, maybe think about applying for one! Why not spend your break making money if you find a job you enjoy?

Watch Holiday Movies

This one’s a no-brainer, but in case you needed the validation that endlessly watching holiday movies over break is okay, here it is. If you need some help deciding what to watch, here’s a list from Parade of the 60 best Christmas movies to watch.

Read

Sometimes school can make reading feel like such a chore, but finding a good book that you can’t stop reading until the end is one of the best feelings ever. However, books can be really expensive depending on where you purchase them from. Thriftbooks.com is an amazing source to purchase books, both new and used, for prices as low as $3.99! Relax your body, but exercise that brain over break!

These are just a few of the ways you can spend your time over winter break, but there are plenty more. Learn to bake, binge your favorite television show, knit a sweater; the opportunities are endless! Here’s to a relaxing and rejuvenating winter break.
