How To Avoid Axinn But Still Ace Your Midterms

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Welcome to Midterms Week, collegiettes—otherwise known as “Hell Week”.  Every year, this week seems like a long race to the Spring Break finish line.

And while you’re hyping yourself up with Red Bull and study snacks, you may find yourself in another race all together. A race for study space.

With all the study benefits that our lovely library provides; quiet floors,  the new technology on the 2nd floor and group study rooms, ample study space is not one of them.  With of the near 12,000 students at Hofstra University, the eleven floors of Axinn Library unfortunately aren’t enough real estate for everyone to get their ideal spot. So, if you find yourself wondering through the stacks and can’t find your desired niche, here are some other spaces on campus you can claim as your own.

Tower Lounges:

Since the new renovations, each floor of the Towers now has a study lounge as well as the open space on the 13th floor. Some even come with white erase board and tables.

Hammer Lab:

Open 24/7, Hammer has all your technological needs at hand. You’ve got Macs, PC’s and the Help Center all within the same room.

Calkins Lab:

Known for the huge studios and amazing student artwork on display, many overlook the computer lab in Calkins. But in reality, its the hidden gem of study sesh stations! You can book a group work area and the staff office is always stacked with helpful IT technicians.

The Student Center Commuter Lounge:

Although there’s some walkthrough traffic, this place is deserted after around 10 pm most nights and has some of the plushiest chairs and couches on campus.

The Law Library:

Because Hofstra’s law students are some the most stressed and studious pupils here, it would make sense that their library is ten times quieter than anywhere else. And you don’t need to be a law student to take advantage, just show your Hofstra card when you walk in.

No matter what space you choose, remember to have your study essentials with you; i.e. snacks, books, technology, chargers, so you can plop down, buckle down and get to work!
