5 Questions To Ask In A Job Interview, Because No One Likes To Be Caught Off Guard

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Job interviews are anxiety-inducing for many people, especially when you hear the words “do you have any questions?”. Before coming to college, I never fully understood the point and importance of having a list of questions prepared to ask. While there are as many different possible interview questions as there are interviewers, it always helps to be ready for anything. Here are a few questions that we found helpful that’ll help you stand out from other applicants.

What are some details about what a typical day-to-day would look like?

This is a more popular question to ask, but it gives you an opportunity to get great insight on what you are potentially getting yourself into. This is typically a good question to ask first because it feels like a good warm-up.

I read about the company’s _____, can you tell me a little bit more about that?

Asking a question like this shows the interviewer that you’ve done your research and are enthusiastic about learning more. It also could give you a better feel for the kind of environment they have.

What are some goals that you have for yourself, the company, and the employees?

This questions goes hand-in-hand with the last one but could give you a completely different answer. This feels like a challenging question for the interviewer but that isn’t a bad thing (they’re looking to be questioned!). This also could show them that you are ambitious and think about the future which is important.

Could you describe a difficult work situation and what you did to overcome it?

Good and teamwork and problem-solving are key to having a successful work environment. It’s important to know what kind of person you’ll be working under and hopefully this question will give you an understanding of the kind of people you could potentially be working with.

How do leaders set employees up for success?

This would be a great question to ask if you want to see if the company’s leaders align with your expectations. Find a management style that would help you to reach the height of your potential.

People always see interviews as a time to shine and impress the interviewer. And while all of that is true, it’s also an important time to decide if the company is a right fit for you. Have a list of questions ready to help you through your next interview!
