Greek Yogurt- What is Greek yogurt? Fermenting milk with live bacteria cultures makes Greek yogurt.  Sounds GROSS but the health benefits make it much better.  In 8 ounces of Greek yogurt you can find 24 grams of protein!  Greek yogurt can also help your body with weight loss particularly in the stomach area.   Try using this power food as a substitute for mayonnaise, sour cream, or cream cheese.  You will save on calories and fat since most Greek yogurt is fat free!  Greek yogurt can be found in the C-Store in the UC in the back left corner!  They offer many different kinds but my favorite is Sage with strawberries!

Fresh Fruit– Skip the canned fruit.  It’s loaded with sugars and defeats the purpose of eating fruit.  Go for the fresh fruit in the baskets at the Farmer’s Market or the bananas apples and oranges you can choose as your side at the Farmer’s Market and The Grille.

Fresh Veggies- Take advantage of all of the fresh veggies at the Farmer’s Market! Load your salad with the vegetables they have to offer.  Don’t like salad? Just get veggies to eat like finger food!
Try this: Take fresh sliced tomatoes, sprinkle some feta cheese over them and drizzle the balsamic vinaigrette over it and you have yourself a healthy mix!

Tuna:  Skip the tuna at the Subway (it is loaded with mayo) and go for the tuna at the Farmer’s Market or The Bakery.  The benefits of tuna are endless including cardiovascular health through its omege-3 fatty acids.  Tuna is a true power food so throw it on a salad, make a wrap or pita with it, or try my favorite:  load some tuna on an English muffin, top with some cheese and melt it in the oven, a tuna melt!

Turkey- Turkey is naturally low in fat, contains almost half of the daily recommended folic acid, has a good source of vitamins, and has been found to keep your cholesterol down.  Along with many other benefits it is also available in The Bakery, and The Café.  Don’t want a sandwich?  Throw it on a salad!

Peanut Butter- PROTEIN.  In 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, you will find 7 grams of protein.  Your body uses the amino acids in protein to repair muscle tissue so it is important to get your protein in after a workout.  Peanut butter also offers healthy fats, potassium, and fiber.  Next time you get a banana or an apple, ask for a side of peanut butter to put on the fruit!  You can find peanut butter in The Café, The Grille, The C-Store, and The Bakery.

My favorite:  A peanut butter and banana sandwich on wheat bread.  Try it next time you are at The Grille :)

Christina Buttafuoco is a sophomore Communications-Journalism Major with a minor in English Writing at High Point University. She is a sister of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, a lover of musicals, and an avid viewer of the Food Network. Christina grew up on Long Island, NY and headed down south to North Carolina during those awkward middle school years. Before she moved, her best friend ripped out pages from a fashion magazine and told her not to forget what fashion was. She didn't. Now Christina hopes to be an editor for one of those magazines one day. For now, she is so excited to bring Her Campus to HPU.
