Valentine’s Day puts some pressure to create a nice date, but it doesn’t have to bee difficult or demanding to put together a fun night for your significant other. Here are our tips for the top places to go and things to do on Valentine’s.

  1. If you want to do on a romantic dinner and haven’t made a reservation yet, try to choose a smaller place that might not be in the center, because most bigger restaurants are already fully booked. This will also help you create a more intimate dinner date.
  2. The English subject organization SUB ry is having a music night at Bar Mendocino, so if you want to support student musicians and see a performance after a dinner or a movie, go there! Alternatively, grab your friend or date and head to Storyville to enjoy Mardi Gras vibes.
  3. Movie date is a good, traditional option. Don’t try to squeeze Fifty Shades of Gray into your night though, because it has been one of the most popular movies for this Valentine’s, but rather opt for movies that have been out for a while already and will not be so full. LGBT-themed movie Pride is uplifting and is a nice feel-good movie for Valentine’s as is the adorable Paddington. For music lovers we’d suggest Whiplash or Frank.
  4. Romantic night in: sometimes it’s good to stay out of the bustle of the city center and cook a dinner together and perhaps have a picnic on the living room floor. This is a very affordable option and very intimate, which can score you major brownie points from your significant other!
  5. For singles, this is an opportune time to grab all your friends and go out celebrating: LeBonk and DTM (in Mannerheimintie) are hosting annual Valentine’s Day parties, and Kuudes Linja (in Kallio) is holding a rap gig for those interested in music.
  6. Sports fans can have a fun night with friends (or dates, if they are also interested in sports – don’t try to force them though!) by watching the Blues vs. Tappara game at home or at a sports bar.
  7. Go ice skating: traditional Valentine’s rousette skating is being held again in Brahen kenttä, where you can either take a partner or a friend, or trust your luck that you’ll get a nice partner.
