Too Fantastic to Be Real: a Johanna Kurkela Concert Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Helsinki chapter.

My heart beats like crazy.  A dark hall is full of exciting, electric energy. My eyes are fixed on the stage when the band members walk to their places. The spotlights turn on and the vocalist appears in front of the microphone. And the concert starts.

I didn’t have any expectations when I thought about the upcoming Johanna Kurkela concert to which my mom had bought us tickets. But as soon as Kurkela started to sing my mind was blown. Her voice was at the same time so delicate and fragile, it felt like it could break so easily, but so perfect it filled up the whole hall and the hearts of the people there. I was not the only one holding back tears just after a couple of songs.

Kurkela’s Ingrid tour had quite different songs compared to her earlier production. I got to hear many love songs but also some songs which could have been written by a depressed human being. I felt it was so easy to identify with those songs. They told the story of a person trying their best who was just so tired of work and life in this hectic world. Overall I think the gig was a great success. It felt like a performance in which Kurkela was the main character. Her outfits, amazing voice and stage performing created a harmonic wholeness which resembled a fairy tale or another sweet story.

If you want to experience an emotional and touching night this is the one to choose!
