Romantic Webtoons to Read This Valentine’s Day!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Helsinki chapter.

It is that time of the year again when hearts, couples and chocolate are celebrated. Webtoon is a Korean app that is a great place to find out many genres of hundreds of different comics to read. The best reading experience is in the Webtoon app which is free to download, but you can find the comics also on www.webtoons.com  The comics are in English, so no need to be a master of Korean language. If you are a fan of manga, comics or just want to explore digital art, here are four Webtoons you should read this Valentine’s Day!

1.    True Beauty  In this comic, you will follow the story of a Korean university student Jugyeong and her love life. The comic describes her adopting makeup and style and thereby becoming popular on Instagram. Suho and Seojun are friends of Jugyeong who slowly realise that they have feelings for her. If you like teen drama/teen romance comics and want to see more of Korean dating culture this is for you! Comic artist Yaongyi looks strikingly similar to the protagonist, you can find her on Instagram @meow91__ .

2.    Siren’s Lament  This fantasy romance comic tells the story of Lyra, who works in a flower shop and takes care of her grandmother. Her childhood friend Shon is always around, and Lyra has feelings for him. As the comic develops, Ian enters the series as the third protagonist. All three of them get to involve with sirens, that are human on earth and mermaid/merman in water element like ocean. The artist Instantmiso’s beautiful and high-quality art makes you dive into the story and zoom in to see the carefully made details. In some episodes there is even background music made by KennyComics that you can play as you read through the comics. If you can’t get enough of fantasy and romance comics where the plot makes you keep reading this is for you! The best thing is that the series has two seasons, which means many episodes to binge read! You can find the artist on Instagram @sirenslament and enjoy more art.

3.    Where Tangents Meet  A romantic comic by Instantmiso, in which Rachelle and Landon meet and start to develop feelings for each other. They are both students at an academy when they meet as an innocent and bubbly member of the student council (Rachelle) and thoughtful and rebelious student that is interested in space (Landon). The comic has many dialogues between the protagonists, when they try to figure out each other and their relationship through many ups and downs. The complete series has 43 episodes and there are many translations available, in case you like to read in other language than in English.

4.    Choco Latte  Beautiful kind-hearted girl goes through her life as a student and one day goes to a cafe where she at once develops interest in the barista. This series is interesting because it has no conversation by words, just the emotion is described in the pictures that the reader can easily relate to due to their universal human feelings and happenings. Since there are no words to affect the reading, it is quite a refreshing way to make a comic. And if you don’t like to catch up with hundreds of episodes, this one has just a few over 30 published as of now now (7 Feb 20) so not bad! If you want to experience a little laugh and an innocent romance this is for you! The comic is by Ann.

Here are just my personal favorites of the comics, hope you’ll enjoy! ❤️
