Reasons Why This Year’s Holiday Season Is More Important Than Ever!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Helsinki chapter.

Finally, after a long wait – at least it felt so this year! – December, or as we all know it the “Holiday season”, has begun.

In general, the most commonly followed Holiday traditions such as opening our Christmas calendars, setting up colourful lights and decorations, or baking all sorts of cinnamon flavoured goods – just to mention a few – have always been part of the yearly ritual of “letting go of the past” and have something else in mind after a year’s worth of happenings.

After Christmas all this is then narrowed down finally on New Year’s, when people around the globe gather together in order to let go of the past year, and to set their minds towards the upcoming season. Why is it then even more important to celebrate during this year’s holidays than ever besides the current health crisis? At this point in 2020, one does not even need to emphasise how bizarre the past year has been for so many, struggling with the pandemic. Luckily the time of having something else to think about and to prepare yourself for next year is just few weeks away! However, it is still important to keep in mind healthy measures and safety distances so this year’s celebrations might not be as festive and jolly as previous years. The question remains then: how could we still celebrate and follow the holiday traditions with the people we love, but also be safe and sound, just to have a tiny break before starting the new year?

The reasons for considering this year’s holiday season as one of the most important ones for a long time is then the urgent need for having something else to think about in order to have a tiny break and to spend it with the people around. However, celebrating is not possible for everybody, when it comes, for example, to work or other reasons. However, for those who are planning to celebrate this year: take a break and spend some quality time with yourself or others – both in real life an online. You deserve it!
