Korjaamo Kino is Worth a Visit

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Helsinki chapter.

As a film lover, I go to the cinema on quite a regular basis, and finding a new cinema to go to is always a pleasure. What’s even better, this place is just a 10-minute tram ride from Kamppi!

Korjaamo Kino is the newest addition to the Korjaamo Culture Factory. The Factory was founded in an old tram deport in Töölö in 2004. The building is beautiful to look at on the outside, and airy and fresh on the inside. While the simple décor has its pull, some could say it looks a little unfinished with walls covered with simple plywood. However, what’s inside of these walls is what really matters. There are two film auditoriums with 124 seats each.

Korjaamo Kino advertises itself as an urban neighborhood cinema that shows both handpicked premiere films and high-quality indie films. On the opening weekend, the films showed were The Danish Girl (British), Marshland (La Isla Mìnima, Spanish), Tappajan näköinen mies (Finnish), Rams (orig. Hrùtar, Icelandic) and The Revenant (American). A good mix of films from different backgrounds!

One of the peculiarities of the cinema is that you can’t buy tickets to assigned seats. Buying tickets online is simple, and you have to redeem the tickets at the venue and queue to the auditorium. If you’re going with a larger group I’d suggest you to go early to make sure you can all sit together.

Under the same roof are also two restaurants, Sushibar + Wine, and Korjaamo Bar & Kitchen, and you can purchase some sweets and popcorn in the lobby. There are also cold tapas dishes available to buy and eat while watching a film. What I really enjoyed was the possibility to eat proper food during the film. There are small build-in tables, similar to those in airplanes, to make this experience even more enjoyable.

With similar pricing as the major cinemas in Helsinki, I believe the small Korjaamo Kino will be popular among film lovers. The food available is a massive plus, if you want to combine film night and dinner, or just hang out after watching a film with friends.
