How to Get Back on Stress Free Study Routine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Helsinki chapter.

Spring is coming, which means over a half of academic year has passed, wohoo! It also means that assignment deadlines are coming up. You may feel overwhelmed by school work and feel it hard to conquer all the work. But I bet you want to have motivation and energy to learn and grow as a student and get things done in time. Here are five tips to make your studies more manageable.

  1. Make a clear schedule

Put everything in one timetable and write it down with a pencil. Put up all the courses with their schedules and also your hobbies. That way you will remember clearly when your classes start. Also, it is easier to plan meetings with friends when you know your schedule.

2. Lead an energetic life style

Being alert on lectures and making a good essay requires that your mind and body health is good. Sleep enough, eat regularly, exercise everyday. You know all these things, but for stress free life you need to also be active and make changes. Go to bed earlier to get enough sleep. Take a healthy snack with you to avoid buying something unhealthy from the supermarket. Try a new hobby that makes you feel excited. Make big changes small steps at a time, but still keep moving towards a life style that makes you feel energetic and overall amazing.

3. Plan your study routine

Planning is a very effective way to get things done in time. There’s a difference between an unknowing mindset in which you assume you have lots of time and then you do nothing and a mindset when you know all the due dates and plan your reading and essay writing precisely. For example, when you know that you need to read only 25 pages a day you are more likely to do so than when you don’t plan at all. Pro tip: plan the next day’s “to-do list” the evening before, then you are more likely to get all the things done.

4. Balance your work and pleasure

Work effectively. Know when you are most effective during a day and study at that time. Make sure you have no distractions when you start doing your homework. That way you can finish earlier and have more free time. When you know that you will study only for a certain amount of time and will complete certain tasks you’ll also have the motivation to finish them. Reward yourself after a good study session. Also make yourself clear when you cannot think about school or all the work you need to do to fully enjoy and rest on your free time.

5. See friends often

It is important to have social life. With like-minded people you can have good thought-provoking conversations.  Have a lunch meeting, study together in a cafe or in library, go for a walk to catch up. Even if you are busy try still to make effort to connect with friends. It can be just an FB message in which you tell them that they are in your thoughts and you would like to meet with them. These small acts and meetings are very important for you and your friends to prevent getting too caught up in stress and negativity. Avoid getting too immersed in school because in the end all that really matters are the people around you.
