The Do’s and Don’ts of Sitsit

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Helsinki chapter.

Autumn is here which means it’s time for academic dinner parties, or sitsit, again! Whether it’s your first sitsit coming up or you’re already an experienced dinner party-er, here’s some tips for attending these awesome parties!

DO check the dress code beforehand

Sometimes you’re expected to show up in your pj’s, sometimes a sitsit requires something super fancy. The dress code can be found on the invite or event page, so make sure you’re dressed right for the occasion as it can vary a lot and you don’t want to show up under or overdressed.

DON’T go overboard with the pre-party drinking

There will be booze at sitsit (and the afterparty as well) so it’s probably best not to get too wasted before the dinner even starts.

DON’T rely on the sitsit menu for your main meal of the day

In other words, make sure you’re not starving before arriving at sitsit. The focus at dinner is more on the drinking and singing than actual eating, and drinking with a half-empty stomach is a sure recipe for disaster.

DO make sure you know the rules – and follow them

There is a set sitsit etiquette which you’ll want to follow (and which will be explained to you if it’s your first time attending a sitsit). If you’re not sure what to do, a safe bet is to look around and copy what others are doing.

DO enjoy yourself!

Sitsit is a great, traditional opportunity to get to know your fellow students better and have a good time. Enjoy yourselves, collegiettes!
